A woman’s life in Shakespeare’s time was rather different from the way it is now. They didn’t have many rights or things they could do to provide for themselves or their families. Many women weren’t even educated beyond the basics. Those who were taught beyond this point still weren’t taught as much as male students. If they were educated at all, there was nothing they could do since women couldn’t get jobs like men could. Not too long ago, women couldn’t even vote for elected officials to lead the country they lived in. People would go through life believing that women weren’t to be treated as equals, when something like gender or race is completely beyond a person’s control. However, some women dressed as men to serve in the army or do other tasks that they couldn’t normally do. These people were brave to do something like this, but most were caught and punished. Not all people fighting for gender equality were women, though. There were many men at this time who thought it was wrong and took action.
