lawyer referred to a quote in the transcript that showed Roger had pushed the rock with a violent intention. Roger also said, “I couldn’t aim the boulder, it was too heavy for me to move”, the lawyer responded with, “Then why was there a lever there”. Just this one question pinned Roger down and proved that he was lying. At first I decided Roger was not guilty, but then as he started stumbling on his own words, and my mind started to change. Roger was really never friends with Simon nor Piggy, he was always rude to them. Roger was always a quiet child, perhaps he was hoping for something to happen to Piggy, Simon and maybe the tribe. Roger also was part of the group that had murdered Simon without hesitation. Even if Roger was being submerged into a mob mentality, which does not excuse him for being a part of a murder. Roger is guilty because of being guilty by association. Roger has no excuse of being not guilty because he repetitively stabbed Simon in the ribs that made him bleed to death.
As for Jack, he was convicted guilty for Simon’s death but not Piggy’s death.
Jack acted as if he was getting tired of Simon’s complaining in the beginning of the story. Whenever Simon would faint Jack would shrug it off as if it was nothing, this could imply that Jack didn’t really care for Simon and was becoming an annoyance to him. Jack was at first a nice child, but after living on the island for so long turned into a savage. Jack took advantage of everyone being young and tried to take control over everyone by becoming somewhat a dictator. Jack would soon lead all of the children into savagery. Jack teaches the children how to jab with a spear using Robert as an example. This foul example leads the tribe into killing Simon without even noticing because their mindset is on killing and blood. When Piggy had been smashed by a boulder Jack was the most surprised out of the group, implying that he had nothing to do with it and was just so shocked he didn’t know how to react. Jack was also never close to Roger to begin with, Jack had said in the court case that they were just acquaintances. Jack however was the sole reason Simon’s death had occurred. Jack got all the children riled up with a dancing chant prior to the killing of Simon. If Roger was guilty for guilt by association there is no reason Jack would also be guilty for the same reason. Jack also had many violent incidents that were excused, yet he is not being put on trial for those actions. During
the court case Jack was trying to hide the fact that he knew it was Simon crawling on the floor. A lawyer approached him asking Jack how he did not see Simon if the fire was lighting up the atmosphere. Jack was lost in words afterwards and was sent off the stand. For my final verdict I pronounce Jack guilty for Simon’s death and Roger guilty for both accounts of Simon’s and Piggy’s death.
