IS PIERRE PELADEAU A GOOD ROLE-MODEL FOR BUSINESS STUDENTS?

Many of us have heard of Pierre Peladeau, a man who built a multi-billion dollar company from a $1,500 loan. He is one of the most famous entrepreneurs of Quebec history. There is no doubt that he achieved a lot during his life time and there is no doubt that a lot of it was good. He was and is still an icon of Canadian business world. For instance, he was known for donating millions to charities and even visiting dying strangers in Montreal hospitals. However, nothing is perfect and there is always a dark side that, for many people, is unrevealed and unknown. This paper demonstrates that Pierre Peladeau is not a good role model for business students because the bad things he did overshadow the good ones.

First of all, to be able to prove that Peladeau is not a good role-model for business students, we have to understand what a role-model is. The meaning of role-model refers to person who serves as an example, whose behavior is emulated by others. True role models are those who possess the qualities that we would like to have and those who have affected us in a way that makes us want to be better people. A person who serves as an example of the values, attitudes, and behaviors associated with a role. For example, a father is a role model for his sons. Role models can also be persons who distinguish themselves in such a way that others admire and want to emulate them. A role model is an inspiration.

Pierre Peladeau was involved in several controversies, the most famous being the anti-Semitic remarks made against the Jewish community, his bouts with alcoholism and his well deserved reputation as a womanizer. There were also some sexist comments about business women.

All his life, he was often accused of anti-Semitism. He said that Jews people take up too much space in Quebec economy, those comment offended Montreal 's Jewish

Unfortunately, his success was threatening to some of his fellow officers, particularly those who wanted to keep Jews out of the military. He was assured by a General Dionne that Jewish officers were "valued as highly as any others". Nonetheless he was troubled by anti-semites on the job. This wasn't terribly surprising at a time when anti-semitism was a socially acceptable and in fact a somewhat popular…

Business culture can vary greatly between different cultures, so it is no surprise that trouble has arisen during the transition between M.Legris’ (French) dictatorial but very socially aware management style and the limited experience of Dr Barfuss and his participative focused style of management, with much less emphasis on acting in a socially driven manner.…

Role models are very important when it comes to social learning because we are more likely to do what they do they do so we memorise what they do well and then we copy. This is because we look up to them and it can be very different from copying someone in the street. This is because we would rather imitate our role models because we may think they are the best in everything that they do. Personally my role model is Nelson Mandela because despite all the challenges that he faced through his life has been strong, passionate, worked hard and he stood to what he believed in no matter how much people wanted him dead. Another reason is because he has achieved a lot throughout his life, but unfortunately he’s passed away now even though this doesn’t change my mind. I want to be able to achieve similar things to him. For this reason I copy his behaviour when dealing with certain problems.…

The definition of a role model is “a person whose behavior, example, or success is or can be emulated by others, especially by younger people.” I think this is the most accurate description because when you find your role model, you do your best to emulate them in any way you can. I do this for my role models and im sure other people do it for…

Outright accusing people of being sinners and condemning them to hell was a norm violation that directly involved people who had been previously ignoring him in the situation. I found it interesting that people who previously had no interest in the situation would then become involved in order to defend themselves or others, or to show their disapproval of the comment. The behavior that seemed to upset others the most were his attacks on other spiritual and religious paths and ways. Overall the overarching theme of his social violations and the reactions to them was that of a bully and a varied group of students, some of them victims, some of them willing to stand up, and most of them willing to ignore the…

In Candace Allen’s article titled “The Entrepreneur as Hero”, she introduced that every society needs heroes. First she said that heroes go to the unknown. Second is the encountering of the hardship and challenges. Third is the return with something new. The author tries to compare the pattern of the hero to the entrepreneur, finding themselves in a difficult situation then finding ways to get a solution. Furthermore, she also mentioned that “The heroic entrepreneur will continue to anticipate what the future will demand of him. He is no ordinary businessperson whose main priorities are simply turn profits, avoid loses, or seek to maintain his share.” “But to venture forth again and again into unknown to create and bring back that which individuals…

In our country it is not so rare to hear someone saying about Russian billionaires: “Hey! This guy is a big shot! And no wonder he has robbed our taxpayers in the 90’s!” Well, there is a great part of truth in these words. Of course it is the fact that our prominent businessmen have been still going hand in hand with some criminal leaders. And lamentable as it is many of them have scraped together their fortune exactly thanks to the pauperization of the great mass of the population in the end of the previous century. But actually do you think that honesty and decency are the first things a true business leader should possess? As for me, so I am sure that all the people including and businessmen ought to be fair to a certain degree. And to tell the truth I do not think that Russian oligarchs are the best example to follow, as I am among those people who believe that the money they have got are ill-gotten. But anyway there are so many tycoons deserving to be respected in the world. In my opinion Swedish businessmen are among the best ones. It has no sense to enumerate all of them by names, we do not know them at all. It is quite enough to note that exactly they have made such world-known and sought-after brands as IKEA, Ericsson, H&M. Swedish entrepreneurs are known in the business world for their diligence, punctuality, accuracy, professionalism, thoroughness, honesty and reliability in business relations. And what is more important I believe that business leaders in Sweden put in the first place the solution of social security problems of their subordinates. They want their workers to be well-to-do and satisfied with working conditions. So there is no doubt that businessmen from this country possess all the traits necessary for the business world. Of course business is something that everyone in the world wants to do, but the fact is that we do not always get lucky with that. There are so many requirements to meet to be a perfect entrepreneur and unfortunately many…
