What is research?
To research is to purposely and methodically search for new knowledge and practical solutions in the form of answers to questions formulated beforehand.
These questions could be how asked by any one in any profession or occupation.
What is nursing research?
Nursing research is research that provides evidence used to support nursing practices.
The questions of concern to nurses may be how best to perform a particular procedure, or how to care for patients with a particular disease.
Practicing with research information is termed “evidence-based practice.
Today, many nurses now work as researchers based in universities as well as in the health care setting with the aim to improve practice.

Searching for the best evidence
Critically appraising the literature
Integrating evidence into practice
Evaluating the results
Disseminating the results
Why has research-based practice become important for nursing practice?
Research is essential to improve nursing practice.
Research is used to legitimise nursing as a profession, because all established professions must undertake research to remain current.
Professional education should reflect a research base in the area.
What level and quality of evidence should be used?
a. For clinical practice the preferred evidence is high level research such as systematic reviews ( summary of various researches)
b. The acceptability depends on the pyramid( the higher the better)
