Ruby Bridges: Different Types Of Discrimination
Knowledge- From what I have understood discrimination is when you judge someone by something that doesn't have to do with the content of the character but a feature someone is born with or given and can’t change.
I now know a lot about discrimination after watching many movies and reading many books. One of the movies that I watched was Ruby Bridges. In that movie ruby was discriminated at the “white” school just because of her race. One of the books I read was called “Mahatma Gandhi.” He was discriminated by the color of his skin. He even lead a march to stand up for himself and others but yet he was still judged. There are many different types of discrimination, here are what they are: Age, Disability, Equal Pay, Genetics, Natural Origin,

Personally I have heard it in many books and movies in class, for example we watched a movie called “Little Tree” It talked about a boy who has a indian background but now lived on the country side. Most people disliked him or as I should say they discriminated him for his indian background. This form of discrimination is called natural origin discrimination. But movies and books aren't the only place. My dad works at the Portland Police Department and sometimes I will hear him talking about how people protest about racism. So when they protest about it they are referring to race/color discrimination. Also in class we have been reading a lot about discrimination. Most commonly about race/color discrimination. One of my favorite books was called “Me, Mama Dentist.” this was my favorite because it was very fun and interesting to read but yet it was very powerful and it made me think about it. The story was about how the mamas child had very rotted teeth and tried to go the a white dentist and mama was almost sure the dentist would let her come in because she donated money to him to help him build it. But yet the dentist refused and mama was furious. That book is an example of race/color discrimination. These are the places iv’e seen

    * Discrimination is different from prejudice and stereotyping by that of discrimination actually takes action. Whereas prejudice and stereotyping are more of making assumption of a person or a race, assuming that they are one way due to their ethnicity or what they heard about them before getting to know them. Discrimination as I stated actually takes action there are so many different types of discrimination that actually take place today. Example: Hate crimes- people do these acts based on a person’s race, religion, or sexual preference. With this form familie’s. Another type of discrimination is institutional discrimination this can hinder someone from being hired because of their past or even color. An institution can hire just one race that controls all the laws over a town, and then make it hard for the minority to live since they may not know what it is like to struggle with everyday life.…

One type of discrimination is racism. First of all, many people think different races should be treated different. People think this because back when slaves were around, they were all black. Secondly, some people are stuck in the past on how people (not white) were treated before. Some white people still think they are better than other races.…

Discrimination can come in all shapes and sizes. It can happen in everyday life and also in the work place. A lot of discrimination comes from ignorance, uneducated, stereotypes, and fear. These things do not excuse the behavior but are clearly things that can be changed. Some of these behaviors come from learned traits as a child and embedded in us in our upbringing. The community and media play a big part as well. The peers we surround ourselves with also influence us more then we may think. When something is different then what we are used to, the unknown scares us and placing prejudice in the place of the fear makes it easier to cope with. At which point this leads to discrimination to different degrees.…

Dictionary.com, 2009 describes discrimination as “unfair treatment of a person or group on the basis of prejudice.” Throughout history discrimination happened through segregation of buses, schools, restaurants and other public facilities. There were barriers that blacks faced when dealing with discrimination. Blacks and whites were held to different standards with white being more valuable to society. Not only were whites and blacks treated unequal, women from both races have struggled with being discriminated against. Women faced discrimination of popular belief that they were to stay home, bear children, cook, and clean (Disparity vs. Discrimination, 2006). Disparity and discrimination are often misunderstood. Disparity is believed to be a product of discrimination and starts with the process of arrest all the way to sentencing (Disparity vs. Discrimination, 2006). For example those who are unemployed are believed to be given fewer leniencies than those who hold jobs (Disparity…

In the beginning of this class I learned about discrimination, which is when people treat others different because of their skin color. In the book “The Secret Life of Bees,” the main character, who is white, has a babysitter who is black which one day goes out to the town to sign a paper that would help black on something. On the way there a white guy comes and starts making fun of her because she was black, so then she spit at the guy’s shoe…

Discrimination - “The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the ground of race, age, or sex.” Racial discrimination - “Treating someone unfavorably because he/she is of a certain race or because of personal characteristics associated with race (such as hair texture, skin color, or certain facial features).” Discrimination isn’t a newly faced issue in our society today. We have witnessed many events where racial discrimination has taken place all over the country. I chose to research this topic because it was a topic that came up during our Civil War presentations in Social Studies class. Racial discrimination is a terrible issue that’s been around for quite a while and is negatively affecting…
