An umpire needs confidence controlling the game and have a powerful voice and a strong blow for the whistle. As an umpire, you need to know the rules and practising will help you. Now I do know the rules I am confident in umpiring. I wasn’t very confident before the carnival but now I feel very confident to umpire a game of netball.
Reflecting on the carnival I felt I did umpire really well, the children understood me as the game went along. I haven’t had that much experience with umpiring but now I am really confident. One of my strengths is that I have a loud voice and I can control the court with my voice. During the day after we played Lady of Hope primary school Harlan from St John the Apostle (the School I was helping to umpire) came up to me to and said that he thought the other umpire was hard to hear because he didn’t move and he said I was great because I moved around and I was loud enough for them to hear the calls.
1- I need to improve my fitness for umpiring because it does get tiring running up and down the court. The carnival games went for 10 minutes so I didn’t get that tired but obviously a full game is a lot longer. I need to improve by running more and eat
