ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION SECTION II Total time-2 hours

Question 1
(Suggested time-40 minutes. This question counts for one-third of the total essay section score)
Directions: The following prompt is based on the accompanying ten sources.
This question requires you to synthesize a variety of sources into a coherent, well-written essay. When you synthesize sources, you refer to them to develop your position and cite them accurately. Your argument should be central; the sources should support the argument. Avoid merely summarizing sources.
Remember to attribute both direct and indirect references.
Introduction
War puts fear in families of those who serve. However, war is a necessity in order to keep peace among countries. With war come soldiers; not enough soldiers leads to mandatory military duty.
Assignment
Read the following sources (including the introductory information) carefully. Then, in an essay that synthesizes at least five of the sources, develop a position on the most important consideration facing mandatory military duty in the world.
You may refer to the sources by their titles (Source A, Source B, etc.) or by the descriptions in parentheses.
Source A (Rangel and Lacey) Source B (Galston) Source C (Brown)

David W. Barno writes in “A New Moral Compact,” about the current problem of having a volunteer military. He writes about the current war the United States is in as well as, previous wars like the Vietnam War. Barno’s main issue is that the population has distanced itself from the military and are less skeptical about going to war. He proposes, “. . .that every use of military force over 60 days would automatically trigger an annual draft lottery to call up 10,000 men and women” (20). Barno believes this will draw the population closer to the war effort eventually, becoming hesitant about going to war. Barno states, “It has also effectively lowered our national threshold for decisions to conduct military operations or go to war” (17). As war…
