Being an international student from Suriname, coming to study at the University of Houston is life changing. I was raised in an undeveloped country that has been facing numerous difficulties such as high crime rate, corruption, poverty, and high food prices. Due to the crisis that is presently going on in the country, there are …show more content…
inadequate employment opportunities. Looking at the direction the nation is going, I made the decision to leave this country and come to the “land of opportunities” hoping to fit in. From a fairly young age, my parents motivated me to perform well in school, which is why I genuinely adore doing my homework and learning something distinct. I have always been fond of challenges, since it encourages me to strive to be the best. The reason why my parents sent me abroad, is because they believe I have the potential to achieve my dreams.
I personally believe tutoring others is remarkably beneficial for all parties.
I still remember assisting my classmates in calculus one, because they had trouble understanding a few concepts. By tutoring them not only did I boost their grade, I furthermore gained better understanding of the concepts which undeniably helped acing the course. An additional aspect I consider essential for reaching my goals is having work experience. During the summer of 2013, I worked for the “DSB Bank” and was liable for getting official bank documents signed by the branch manager and mailing international checks. I also sorted bank documents to be distributed to several divisions within the bank. Currently, I am working for the company “IAMGOLD” in Suriname, where I am learning to code in various programming languages and assisting the help desk support team. Working throughout the summer while taking classes enabled me to learn time management as well. Being in a work environment is a substantial way to prepare for the
future.
I would help increase diversity at the University of Houston, for the reason that I come from a slightly distinctive background. Because of the diverse population in Suriname, different languages are spoken, with the official language being Dutch. Growing up in a country where a myriad of people have different ethnicities, also gave me the opportunity to acquire new cultures and experiences. I have interacted with people who do not have the same cultural backgrounds, yet they still do not consider themselves to be superior to one another. I would increase diversity by starting a club where individuals of different races come together and express their culture and religion. This would be a way for the students to become comfortable and learn from students with other backgrounds. In the real world, diversity is something you cannot escape, which is why we must learn more about one another.
Keeping career goals is best when young, because only if you are aware of what you desire, you can strive to achieve it. In order to achieve my goal I first plan to graduate with an outstanding GPA from the University of Houston. To prepare for my career I have tutored and worked with others, and I am trying to find my weaknesses so I can improve them. Coming from a diverse country, I have worked and studied with people who have different ethnicities, and I want to bring that same atmosphere to the University of Houston.
