School Counselors possess the ability to help children struggling in all facets of life, both in and outside of school. Every child deserves the opportunity to receive an education in the safest and most comforting environment possible, and it is the responsibility of School Counselors to ensure that this environment is provided for all of their students. My first step on the path to becoming a School Counselor was to gain experience working in the field of education. After graduating with my Bachelor’s degree I applied for a job with Gwinnett County Public Schools. Working at Ferguson Elementary School has absolutely been the most rewarding experience of my life. I have proven that I am able to connect and build a rapport with students of all ages. Most of my day is spent in the Opportunity Room, which is where students are sent if they are being too distracting in their classrooms, or if they simply need a quiet space to work. Working in this capacity allows me to help children who are struggling in their classrooms. I am often times the first person these children talk to before the Counselor is able to step in and provide the appropriate help that is needed. I possess many of the qualities that I believe a School Counselor should possess. I have excellent communication skills, I have a great sense of knowing when to sit back and listen, and also when it is appropriate to speak up. I believe this skill to be an asset for a School Counselor because often times children need someone who can advocate for them when they, or their parents, are unable to do so. I am a firm believer in keeping an open mind, especially when working with children. Working in an elementary school has taught me that students and their families come from all walks of life. Keeping an open mind and being accepting of all cultures and backgrounds is incredibly important when trying to build trust, and assure families that I truly have their best interests at heart. I am trustworthy and kind, skills which are crucial when working with children. I am a team player, I am a role model, and above all I am passionate about the success of our youth. Establishing a strong foundation is critical when children are at their most vulnerable state. Laying the groundwork for students to grow and be successful adults is embedded in our education system. Learning takes place in many different settings, and I firmly believe in the importance of being guided in the right direction.
