When I was in elementary school I remember when I used to go one the lunch line and the lunch ladies would serve us our lunches then we would get to buy snacks like different types of chips, ice cream, cookies, and chocolate bars. As I grew older it was always the same but there were more snacks and different types of drinks so instead of milk you could Capri-suns, Gatorade, Snapple’s and sodas. While more than 70 percent of schools serve lunches that meet the guideline for nutrients like vitamins, minerals and protein. A lot of schools still give out meals that are high in salt, sugar and fat according to a School Nutrition Dietary Assessment study. Even school cafeteritas that serve healthy foods like salad and fruits still also offer things like french-fries that kids can buy instead of regular lunch. A study by the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2006 found that 25 percent of high schools served fast food from places like McDonalds, pizza hut and Wendy’s. Not just junk food and other fatting foods that parents don’t allow their kids to eat all the time. “Improving the quality of the school meals is a critical step in building a healthy future for our kids,” said Vilsack. Vilsack is saying in this quote that while kids get older they learn from what they see, if kids see that all there life for lunch school gives them unhealthy food there going to learn bad eating habits and eat unhealthy food regularly. “When it comes to our children, we must do everything possible to provide them the nutrition they need to be healthy, active and ready to face the future – today we take an important step towards that goal” said Vilsack. In this quote Vilsack is saying that when it comes to children people need to make sure there eating healthy and nutritious because in the long run or the future they won’t have diabetes or face obesity problems and they will be ready to live there life healthy. Also trying to changes school is a step but if kids see that at home there eating healthy, they will learn to healthy in schools. Schools should make sure students are get fruits and vegetables every day. They should provide fat-free or low-fat milk only.
