Seal is a programme that highlights the importance of effective good learning, positive behaviours, uninterrupted attendance and emotional wellbeing. This falls under 3 ‘waves’
The first wave is basically the school creating a happy healthy stimulating environment where children can be taught social and emotional skills, this aims to increase the children’s and staffs skills.
The second wave is children with extra needs being identified and supported within the school. This can be in small groups, it gives opportunities to explore being social and there …show more content…
emotions in a safe space.
The third wave is introducing one to one intervention for those children who have not caught up during the whole school approach or in the small groups, this includes children who may have or be at risk of mental health problems.
These three waves are aimed at all children within a school setting, if one approach does not work then staff have the option to move onto the next approach then the next.
This programme promotes children’s learning to understand/ control their own feelings and emotions. As well as being understanding/ responsive to others around them helping them to grow into emotionally socially able balanced adults. This type of programme shows children they can achieve, providing a self motivation and I can attitude, it promotes a positive view of social/ emotional interaction, encouraging self problem solving or asking for help and working with others.
Seal is normally put into 5 categories:
Self awareness is teaching and promoting self value, it’s about children knowing themselves and knowing /understanding their emotions, feelings, values, beliefs they have, all these things add up to a positive self image and belief in them self and their abilities, promoting their strengths not focusing on their limitations.
Managing feelings is about the children being able to express/ understand their own emotions, by managing their emotions, children can be happier and more positive about all aspects of their life, this can promote better concentration, better appropriate behaviour, and working with others therefore having a better social relationship with peers and staff
members.
Motivation is children working towards their own goals and targets, this is working out how to achieve these goals and have a positive attitude towards learning and recognising their full potential.
Empathy is children understanding and valuing the feelings/emotions of other people around them. This can increase and make friendships stronger, this helps children be respectful and show value/support to other people even though everyone is different and regardless of the differing thoughts/ beliefs they may have.
Social skills are about children building and maintaining positive relationships with those around them, both with peers and staff within the setting. This includes working on problem solving/ conflict resolving.
