By comparing and contrasting the matriarchs of Persuasion and A Room With A View, one can know how Jane Austen’s and E. M. Forster’s societies’ viewed marriage. The matriarch from Persuasion was Lady Russell, who was the Elliot’s Godmother. As the Godmother, Lady Russell had a huge influence on the whole family, especially Anne Elliot. Early on in the novel, Anne Elliot fell in love with a man named Captain Wentworth who at the time being was not of much importance. Since he was as Lady Russell puts it “Captain Wentworth had no fortune,” (Austen, p. 27), Lady Russell thought it was foolish for Anne to marry him; so she “persuaded [Anne] to believe the engagement a wrong thing— indiscreet, improper, hardly capable of success, and not deserving it” (Austen, p. 27). Conveying only one thing to the…
I believe that both teenagers could have been easily persuaded by a group of their peers. Although, Donnie did not have as many friends as John, I felt that because of John’s popularity it crippled him to becoming the one most likely to be persuaded by peer pressure. John is a confident person and once he is in his confront zone he can do whatever it is that he wants to do, but since he had just started the University he was needing to be befriend; which tells me that he would result to drinking, using drugs or skipping class just to fit in.…
They say–“He appeared a credible, genuine person–I’m afraid I didn’t go into it too thoroughly.” “I thought because other people like government ministers and university professors had money invested in it–it would be all right.” Petty & Cacioppo (1981) and Chaiken (1980) have developed theories to explain why people don’t always take a rational route to persuasion. In Petty & Cacioppo’s (1981) Elaboration Likelihood Theory we take a “central route” to persuasion, examining the rationality of the arguments for a course of action if we are very intelligent, or think a lot about decisions, or know a lot about the topic and have plenty of time and are interested. If, on the other hand, we are rushed and the issue isn’t terribly important to us we use Heuristics (Chaiken, 1980) or “quick decision rules”. We take the “peripheral route” to being persuaded, by relying on our own emotions, on how we feel, on what experts say, on what other people are doing, if the issue isn’t very important to us, or we are tired or distracted. So, how we are persuaded depends on the kind of people we are, how much interest we have in the matter, and how much time we have to consider…
There are many dangers that plague us in today’s society. One of the most pressing issues is that of driving under the influence of alcohol. This is a problem for many reasons. Firstly, driving while intoxicated is illegal. It shows the rising problem of substance abuse, and most importantly, driving drunk is deadly. According to "Drinkinganddriving.org" (2008-2013), "900,000 are arrested each year for DUI/DWI and a full 1/3 of those are repeat offenders”.…
Persuasive speeches have been the most challenging speeches in this class for me. The goal is to influence the belief of an audience, convincing them to choose a side. The first persuasive speech I done I was nervous for some odd reason. When it comes to informative speeches I can talk a lot, but it’s different with persuasive speeches. Gaining the attention of the audience enough to persuade them is the major key to a good persuasive speech. Speech 3 was the longest persuasive speech being four to six minutes and it seemed to be the longest. With persuasive speeches, you want to provide the audience with enough information so they’ll be able to choose a side, most likely the side you’re arguing for.…
What is Rhetoric? If you ask a college age adult that question the chances are that they will not know the definition of the word. Some of them might recognize it in as one of their freshmen classes but most do not know. The internet and social media has taught us to believe that rhetoric is for “old people” and nobody uses it any more. How then is a single video of police violence, taken from a specific perspective, used to influence the entire world and incite them into rage? If Rhetoric is such an old school concept why is it that most facts found online are false (LaFrance, Adrienne)? Society need to acknowledge the influence of rhetoric and begin to question any information given to them in this world of knowledge.…

I was instructed during my internship meetups with my supervisor to identify and gain contact information from all attendees which would in turn, provide me with a sense of how different stakeholders could be contacted. These would be stakeholders that ranged from community board members, residents, councilmen, to the highly positioned borough president representative. I believe that that the progress that I have done and made to this point has shown my supervisor that I am capable of such valuable competencies required to become a leader. One article that used an agency capacity model describes networking as a crucial aspect in that agencies require its workers to identify potential funding partnerships that would correspond to the agency's mission(Collins, C pg.S20). A task that comes to mind that occurred recently involved attending my first senior citizens health fair in which my supervisor allowed me to attend and represent Caringkind without supervision. After setting up the station as to where I would be displaying the Caringkind brochures and information, I had an overwhelming feeling of ownership and responsibility to ensure that I did not make any unsure factual statements about the disease or organization that was not stated in the seminars, training and documentation that I have…

I liked learning about how attitudes are measured in chapter six. Especially how they influence our behavior in daily interactions and choices. Learning about a person's attitudes is not only interesting but essential when trying to convey/relay a message to either persuade or influence them. Understanding how credibility can influence attitudes is important when conducting presentations to promoting a product. I plan on using the persuasion techniques and information on attitudes in many of my future public speaking engagements which are aimed at addressing youth in the community. Knowing about certain routes of persuasion will help me to better influence others to either adopt my views but actually take the time to understand them. For example, looking the part of an expert in the field of psychology will enhance my credibility more so with teens rather than what I say.…

Interpersonal persuasion is how someone can receive compliance from another person. A few persuasion techniques that people tend to use are: foot-in-the-door, door-in-the-face, social exchange, and low-balling are among some. Most people at one time or another have encountered one of these examples. The method I am going to reflect on could be an example of both the foot-in-the-door technique and low-balling. I believe it is more of a case of low-balling as it dealt with price…
Life throws a great number of curveballs at me; sometimes it feels like someone is just waiting out there to get me. Nearly every poor, awkward, dangerous, or unfriendly situation is directly caused by decisions that I make, just as good moments get attributed to making intelligent choices. But, sometimes there is someone waiting just around that corner, waiting to strike. The setting is Nelson B.C. circa 2008, in the middle of December; there for the Heritage Classic hockey tourney, where we are favored to win for the second straight year. One of my good friends and teammates, Dazzo, are about to fall into one of the worst roasts in history.…
