Securing sensitive items
In the military most people think when they hear the term "sensitive items" they will think of thing such as weapons, security codes, classified information, ect. However most things in the military are considered to some degree a "sensitive item". . Which if they ended up falling into the hands of the enemy could cause minor or major damage to our nations national security and possibly endanger the lives of those both at home and deployed across the world. A very basic sensitive item used on a daily bases could include your common access card. For example because there is always the possibility of the "insider threat" if you accidentally left your CAC logged on to a computer another individual could now easily gain access to any classified information that you have access to. Things such as convoys carrying food and equipment to soldiers in the field that could become an easy target. Especially if the enemy were to know the exact route and what kind of personnel and vehicles would be transporting the cargo. Another basic sensitive item that all soldiers are assigned is their gear. Most soldiers probably still remember their drill sergeants telling then to never leave their gear behind. If during a firefight you shouldn't just leave an empty magazine on the ground or leave you battle buddies weapon on the ground because he was wounded. You should always take it with you if possible, the reason being is because if no matter how small or insignificant it may seem every piece of gear we're issued can be turned against us. Something like a pistol might not seem like much but if your team member is wounded and you leave something like an AT-4 behind it could be fired at a convoy and then turned into an IED. Items such as keys to a cell in a prison could easily cause a major breach in security. As everybody knows of the last disturbance in the United States Disciplinary Barracks was only possible because a few inmates attacked a guard and got his keys.

O’Brien still mentions items that are carried but rarely are they actual objects. Most of which are feelings, thoughts or attitudes the men carry through out the war. “They carried all the emotional baggage of men who might die. Grief, terror, love longin” (O’Brien, excerpt 8) For example; Lt. Jimmy Cross carries the love for Martha by carrying the picture, letter and the stone. All of these items are what he believed kept him going, they had given him the strength to carry on. After Ted Lavender is shot, Lt. Cross carries the guilt of his death, he felt as though he hadn’t don’t his job protecting his men. “He felt shame. He hated himself. He had loved Martha more than his men, and as a consequence Lavender was now dead, and this was something he would have to carry like a stone in his stomach for the rest of the war” (O’Brien, 7). Lt. Cross’ story shows the battles one in the service goes…

O'Brien's The Things They Carried describes the many different things soldiers carried during the war. Of course they would carry items they would need to survive but not only that, they would also carry personal items. Some of the things the soldiers would carry were a little odd but would mean something to them. Ranging from Henry Dobbins' girlfriend's pantyhose to Mitchell Sanders' condoms, the unit was filled with bizarre articles that held sentimental feeling. Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, however, restricted his personal belongings to pictures and letters from Martha.…

The Things They Carry is a very interesting book telling of war stories which may or may not be true.As the stories go on it tells some things about the soldiers and the things they carry.I believe in the story that everything they carry are either very meaningful to themselves or a necessity.Everyone carries something. Jimmy cross carries his photos of Martha, The men carry can openers, Knives, Kool-Aid, and water, but almost everyone humps (carries) photos of girls, of family, and of friends.Although the men carry these things they also carry things based on superstition.…

When referring to the items in the story the narrator uses them to symbolize, the characters, photos, and letters. “The items structure both the story and the book.”(Henningfeld 1) Allowing a great deal of vision in the story, the narrator shares his stories and as well as other characters who also tell their stories. Soldiers items that they are carrying is more of a metaphor because what each soldier is actually carrying is fear, the feeling of being alive, and his haunting memories.…

In The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien discusses the tangible and intangible items that the soldiers carry with them daily. While some of these items are the necessities of war, such as ammunition, riffles, and rations, they also carry items along the war front that signify a remembrance of their home front. Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, for example, various reminders of his love of Martha, a woman from back home. He carries letters she wrote to him in his backpack, along with a good luck pebble that she sends him in his mouth. Henry Dobbin, another soldier, he carries his girlfriend’s pantyhose around his neck. These objects that the soldiers carry serve to…

O’brien repeatedly states what each soldier is carrying for two reasons. The first reason is character development. The more the reader knows about a character’s possessions the more he/she effectively knows about the characters themselves. An example of this would be how Cross carries a picture of a girl, fantasizing whether or not she is a virgin. Dobbins carries extra rations and his girlfriend’s pantyhose around his neck. This implies superstition and an above average weight. Ted Lavender carries weed and tranquilizers to placate his anxiety. This suggests an inability to cope with death or violence; perhaps wartime as a whole. Finally Kiowa carries an illustrated copy of the new testament and a knife given to him by his father. These possessions allude to the fact that he is a man of god with a respect for his father. I think it id ironic, though, that all of these men’s non-military items are of no real consequence in the war. They don’t do anything. It could be argued…

After reading the short story in “ The things they carried”, there were several entities that meant something towards the things they carried throughout the war. One of the explanations of the meaning “Things” in the story represented the various items that were carried in their backpacks during the course of each mission that the soldiers had to face. Whether they needed the items or not, they still carried it with them. Some of the object that were carried had sentimental meaning and others were objects that are needed for war.…

In the story "The Things They Carried," Tim O 'Brien talks a group of soldiers in the Vietnam War. He does this by describing the items that each of them carries with him during the march. The things that the soldiers carry with them are both physical and mental items and what these things are depends upon the soldier. They carry the basic "necessities" for survival and the bare minimum to make life as civilized as possible. But they also carry memories, and fears, and it is mental items like these that are the main focus of the story. The weight of these items is as real as that of any physical ones, and unlike those physical objects, they are not easily gotten rid of.…

Keeping track of gear is always a must. If the time comes that you have a pause in your patrols, raids, or movements it is always a good decision to take a quick check to make sure that you have your Marine Corps issued gear as well as everything else that you or your team has brought with you on your mission. It is the job of not only yourself but also your fellow Marines to take responsibility and check not only your gear but the gear of the other Marines. In the line of duty if the enemy obtains pieces of gear from your squad it would endanger the Marines in your squad and fellow armed force members that may come after you. To add the units and individual Marines to whom this gear is issued are held accountable for maintaining them. Losing a piece of gear could have repercussions ranging from payment…

Sensitive items can be defined but not limited to Identification card, weapons, Communication Security (COMSEC) filling devises, classified documents, social security numbers, bank account information, etc. Anything that can be used by any opposing forces or criminals, to gain the up hand, counter attack, weaken forces, harm allies, gain access to protected areas, gain vital information, compromise operational security etc. Operational Security is important to maintain at all times. People will tend to get relaxed while not in a combat operation area. This is very dangerous due to the fact that opposing forces and spies know that this happens and are on a constant mission to obtain any ability to gather information or access areas that are normally not available to them.
