Self Destruction In Romeo And Juliet

In Shakespeare’s works, it seems as though he considers a self-destructive tendency when writing about love. A common theme of his tragedy plays is that love either ends in death, or a great deal of loss. Specifically, in Romeo and Juliet this concept is prevalent. Romeo and Juliet share a seemingly irrational love for one another, leading them on a path for destruction. It is clear that this infatuation that the characters share for one another leads to the self-destructive tendency in this play.

The impulsive quality that Romeo appears to have all centres back to the love he has for Juliet. When the characters fall in love, it seems as though the develop tunnel vision, unaware of the consequences their love may have.
