“The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brian outlines a platoon’s experience during the Vietnam War and specifies many items that the soldiers in the platoon bring while going on marches. If I had to bring three items with me into battle, I would bring a photo of my family (which includes my dog), some type of gun, and a Benedictine bracelet. These things would combine and give me motivation, authority, and protection. Tim O’Brian’s short story “The Things They Carried” is a story, which follows a platoon in the Vietnam War. The platoon is led by lieutenant Jimmy Cross, but Cross keeps thinking of a girl at home which distracts him from taking the proper steps to protect his men.…
In the short story “The Things They Carried” Tim O’brien uses physical objects that each solider is carrying to try to give us a glimpse of their lives and some insight into their personalities. Most of the things the soldiers carried were determined by necessity, such as can openers, heat tabs, helmets and canteens of water. (269). While the reasoning for O 'brien 's “The Things They Carried” is to speak about the physical objects each soldier carried with them, the internal things they carried were much more meaningful.…
The Things They Carry is a very interesting book telling of war stories which may or may not be true.As the stories go on it tells some things about the soldiers and the things they carry.I believe in the story that everything they carry are either very meaningful to themselves or a necessity.Everyone carries something. Jimmy cross carries his photos of Martha, The men carry can openers, Knives, Kool-Aid, and water, but almost everyone humps (carries) photos of girls, of family, and of friends.Although the men carry these things they also carry things based on superstition.…
Tim O’Brien’s, The Things They Carried, contained different memoirs that truly bring the actions of war to life for the reader. Obrien’s book expresses the real feelings a solider faces while getting ready to go into war, in war, and post war. Through his vivid descriptions the reader is able to emphasize with the emotional burdens and stresses solders must go through while on duty. We are able to observe the different coping mechanisms solders must endure, including, cutting them selves off from reality and preoccupying their mind with other, sometimes meaningless, thoughts .The chapter that had the largest impact on myself was “Night Life.” For me this passage truly depicted not just the physical, but mental battle soldiers must go through; and the extreme measures taken to relive themselves from the intensity of battle.…

You always want to have serialized Marine Corps issued gear such as your night vision goggles dummy corded to your body. If your Marine Corps issued gear that can be dummy corded is dummy corded to you, will have a lot less chance to loose any of your gear or anything else you are carrying with you. In case that a United States Marine Infantryman is moving or running, even if your Marine Corps issued gear comes absent from the pouch or pocket you are carrying them in they will not come completely off your body. Any serialized Marine Corps issued gear that the United States Marine Infantryman is carrying on that United States Marine’s body needs to always be dummy corded to that United States Marine Infantryman or even attached the United States Marine Infantryman’s flak jacket. That also includes dummy cording the issued Marine Corps issued gear that is attached to that United States Marines Infantryman’s rifle directly to the United States Marines Infantryman’s rifle such as your ACOG RCO, AN/PEQ 15, and your surefire.…
A great safety item to keep with you at all times is a small flashlight. A quick flash in an attacker's eyes can flood his retina with light. This can induce momentary spot blind ness than can give you valuable time to find a safe place to hide or get out of the danger zone.…

The best method to keep equipment secure is to always have it on your person. The problem with this method is it’s not always possible. Caring around everything would be a very tedious and inefficient process. The next best method is to keep your equipment under lock and key. Keeping that in mind the equipment should be left in a place where security is in place to guard those items. Of course some item will need different levels of security such as weapons.…
In these cases it is extremely important to have you weapon, whether it be an M16A2, M16A4, M4, or a 9MM pistol. You should have it on you for protection at all times and be ready for anything that comes your way. Weather it is an attack on base or an Insider Attack from an Afghan counterpart. This is why a condition 3 weapon (magazine inserted, no round in chamber, bolt forward, ejection port cover close, and weapon on safe) is implemented on Camp Leatherneck and Camp Bastion. You never know when the enemy will attack and should be ready with your weapon at all times.…
Secound important item I will bring would be a journal. I think it's important to bring a journal during a war because I can write down what's going on in the war and write down how im surviving. Bringing a journal is important because you can write letters to relatives back home and write how your doing in the war and how much you miss them. One of my favourite reasons to bring a journal when your in a war is if you survived the war and let's say a the war is over and a few years have past and I have kids, I can always read one of the pages to the kids of what happend when I was in war. These are the reasons why I think bringing a journal would be a important item to bring during a war, it keeps memories of back then what happend during a war and you can show your family and friends your journal.…
The cleaning staff was scene reading documents that were thrown in the trash while performing their cleaning duties. Technically the cleaning staff was not violating any laws because the printouts were tossed into the trash which makes them public information. With that being said the cleaning staff should be…
Keeping track of gear is always a must. If the time comes that you have a pause in your patrols, raids, or movements it is always a good decision to take a quick check to make sure that you have your Marine Corps issued gear as well as everything else that you or your team has brought with you on your mission. It is the job of not only yourself but also your fellow Marines to take responsibility and check not only your gear but the gear of the other Marines. In the line of duty if the enemy obtains pieces of gear from your squad it would endanger the Marines in your squad and fellow armed force members that may come after you. To add the units and individual Marines to whom this gear is issued are held accountable for maintaining them. Losing a piece of gear could have repercussions ranging from payment…
Paying attention to detail is very important. If you are told to do something a specific way, the best thing that you can do is exactly what you were told. There is always a reasoning behind everything you do. Paying attention to detail in the Corrections environment is very important, especially if it has to do with a certain way of completing tasks inside the institutions. If a seasoned officer tells you to do something as a new officer, its probably something that will either make it easier for you or save your life. Sometimes you don’t always agree with what you are told, so the best thing you can do is just complete the task and handle it later with that person. My personal experiences with paying attention to detail brings me back to when I was overseas in Iraq. Me being a new graduate straight out of Boot Camp was one of the biggest challenges. Especially being over there with a group of people whom I know nothing about. Once I met my team leader, he explained to me how he likes to run his truck and his expectations for me. Everyday before we went out on missions, we were told the Intel for the day in the area we were going to be traveling. If we didn’t pay close attention to the hot spots, or target areas for IED’s, we could be putting all our lives at risk. So yes, paying attention to detail is very important, especially if you were in my shoes as the Lead Gunner on our convoys. Everyday I had to pay close attention to every bit of information given to me because my eyes up in the turret were what got everyone of my team members home alive after that year. There was nothing more stressful than knowing that If I slightly missed or didn’t pay attention to one little thing, or overlook anything, I could have put multiple lives at risk. Having on my conscious that everyone of my team members came home alive because of me paying attention to detail is something I am proud to be able to say. In conclusion, paying…
