A child is an active learner who is attracted by the things in this world. He learns everything without knowing that he is learning it and in doing so he passes his impressions from unconscious to conscious mind. Maria Montessori mentioned that the first of the Childs organs that begin functioning are his sense. The period between the age of zero to six years covers a period of rapid physical development. It is the time for the formation of the sense activities as related to the intellect. Young children are a testament to the mind's awesome ability to absorb. A baby is born without language, and with few skills other than their survival instinct. From birth to three years they use their senses (hands, eyes, ears, and nose) to soak in everything that surrounds them. The child does this naturally, and without thought or choice. The information that the child unconsciously absorbs from his surroundings in the early years is used to construct and create himself. Within a few short years a child is walking, talking, and able to feed himself. It is this awesome ability to absorb information that allows children to acquire the language, physical skills (walking, control of his hands), and control over his bodily functions that are necessary for future independence.

Around the age of three years, the child moves from the state of the unconscious absorbent mind, to the state of the conscious absorbent mind. It is during this conscious state of mind that the child begins to intentionally direct and focus his attention on experiences that will develop that which was created during the first three years.

    The theory that mainly focuses on these two factors is known as the cognitive theory. Cognitive theorists believe that a person’s expectations and thoughts greatly affect their actions. The most well-known cognitive theorist was a Swiss scientist by the name of Jean Piaget.     Pertaining to Child Development, the name Jean Piaget has to be mentioned almost immediately at the broach of the discipline. The proclaimed “Grandfather of Child Development”, Piaget was a brilliant psychologist that concluded children developed in four succinct stages. These stages are: Sensorimotor, Pre-Operational, Concrete Operational, and Formal Operational. Each stage signals a different cognitive capacity for the given child. Sensorimotor takes place during the initial two years of the child’s life. Obvious from the name, senses are the main aspect of this stage.
