Treatment of Dogs with Separation Anxiety by means of Natural Remedies: Results from a Doubleblind, randomized, controlled trial
Importance
The overuse of medicines such as clomipramine, can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rate, elevated liver enzymes, and convulsions. Also in the use of natural remedies, there is no limit; whereas; with prescribed medicine, the veterinarians end up changing the medicines or just coming to a halt on the medications due to the side effects and built up immunity of the dog’s. Upon acceptance of this proposal, the IRB will be contacted for approval to experiment on these animals.
Observations
As stated by King’s experiment, “separation anxiety is a common behavioral disorder in dogs. It …show more content…
is characterized by signs of destructiveness, inappropriate elimination (defecation and urination) and vocalization when an affected dog is left alone or is separated from its attachment figure (King 2000). Also as most prescriptions note, human and animals, with any type of medication; there are side effects.
Hypothesis
The natural remedy, chamomile, acts as a mild sedative and anxiolytic and will lessen the severity of side effects while lessening the anxiety in dogs.
Procedures
In the study, we will set three different groups- one receiving the placebo with weights from 4-60 pounds, one with dogs ranging from 4-30 pounds and the last 30-60 pounds at a variety of ages receiving the chamomile.
The ages will range from 6 months to 15 years with up to 40 dogs total, equally diversified. Then letting the owners take the dog’s home to live a normal life, not to put stress on the animals. The owners went home unaware if they have the placebo or not. The conditions will be the same as the experiment in, Treatment of separation anxiety in dogs with clomipramine: results from a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, multicenter clinical trial, at home they are to stop all forms of reprimand or punishment, do certain behaviors with permission of owner only, when they are leaving, pay no attention 30 minutes prior to leaving (Table 2, King). Unlike the experiment King did, the dogs will come in every 15 days for 3 months; where the experimenter will survey the owners on how their behavior regarding elimination, destruction and vocalization in the owner’s absence starting at day 0 to test whether the chamomile is a suitable alternative, as oppose to clomipramine. Doses of chamomile are given every 2-3 hours
(Tilford).
Anticipated Outcomes
The test subjects, dogs, anxiety levels are expected to decrease with the repeated use of chamomile.
