Service-Learning is a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning. Students improve their academic skills by applying what they learn in school to the real world; they then reflect on their experience to reinforce the link between their service and their learning. Having been founded in 1982, the Houston Food Bank provides food to more than 500 hunger relief agencies in southeast Texas. With the help of the new markets Tax Credit Program, the Houston Food Bank expanded their facilities to become the largest feeding America food bank. Their mission is to fight against hunger and find a solution to hunger in times of need. But also to change the fact that 1 in 4 kids, and 1 in 5 hungry neighborhoods currently face hunger. Inspect and sort food items that come to the Houston Food Bank from supermarket and other stores to ensure they meet the quality and food standards. After the inspecting is done, we sorted it out in different category bins, such as personal care, can foods, dry food, drinks, water and medications. My experience at the Houston Food Bank was very positive and an eye opening that sometime you cannot take life for granted. The table group that I was in was very hard working and willing to put in the efforts to communicate as a team and help each other out. One of the first and most important duties was to determine if a product was expired, and if so, dispose of it. At that point, the actual sorting began, items were separated by type of product, and placed into boxes not to exceed a set weight due to the fact that they were going on conveyor belts. This process requires a number of different skills in order to truly maximize your efficiency. The first and probably most important ability is effective teamwork. Teamwork of course is the cooperative effort of a group in order to achieve a common goal, in this case sorting the boxes properly, which leads to the products being distributed quickly and more efficiently.
