Thirty of those fifty service hours are a mandatory aspect of the junior year curriculum and must involve work with either the poor or marginalized. Personally, I chose to complete my necessary hours with the organization Outdoors for All, specifically working with the marginalized. Outdoors for All (OFA) strives to enrich the quality of life for children and adults with disabilities through outdoor recreation by offering programs just as skiing, kayaking, and biking. I participated in their downhill ski program, teaching lessons to people ranging from four to thirty-five years old with a vast array of both mental and physical disabilities. Volunteering with OFA improved not only my teaching skills but my ability to work with all people regardless of their…
Over the summer before my senior year in high school, I was given an amazing opportunity to go to Nicaragua. I was able to expand my spanish vocabulary by teaching a class of adults and children english, talking with many of the locals and venders. The service learning program I went with was Global Glimpse. We learned more about the day to day life of the locals in a third world country. For the service part of the trip we helped improve a local school. We redid the bathrooms, classrooms, and the kitchen. We painted the inside and outside of the bathroom and added a smaller attachable toilet seat for the younger students. Many of the parents who volunteered to cook the lunch for the students said that they needed new cabinets for the dishes…

P3: Explain ways in which health and social care workers support the independence and wellbeing of older people. M2: Assess ways in which health and social care workers support the independence and wellbeing of older people. D1: Evaluate ways in which the sectors work together to support the independence and wellbeing of older people. Doris has stayed connected with her friend Frieda who lives on her own independently but recently she has had a fall and she has been referred to the local authorities. P1& M2 When promoting independence and wellbeing in older people it has to be done in a way where the person feels that they are able to do what they are being asked to do and if they say that they don’t want to do it that is when the care professionals will step in a help. But to support a person’s independence this can be done in many ways and a few ways that can be used are to not take over, so this means that if someone is able to do something like push the button on the traffic light or they are able to dress themselves without help, the care professionals will see if the person wants to do what they are being asked to do like getting themselves dressed and if they don’t this is when they will step in; but to support the independence of the person care professionals must not step when they know that someone is able to do something that they are being asked to do, this is effective and this is because it gives the person a sense of control and it gives them a sense of confidence as well as this is because if someone is being told to do something they are being told that they can do what they are being asked and they are very able to do so; this will make them believe in themselves a bit more if they feel that they are not able to do a lot of things. But then it can also have a negative effect and this is because if someone is being asked to do something they might begin to feel that they are getting told what to do not asked…
Aging is the length of time during which a being or thing has existed length of life (Webster dictionary). Older adults often work with their spouses who need to be cared for due to long term illnesses up until their death, as well as grandchildren and foster children. Many older people take care of their grandchildren because their own children have to go to work or because they have been granted custody due to abuse or incarceration of their children. Many older people who have been given the responsibility of raising another child so late in their life are faced with additional health issues, psychological stress, and social isolation. It is often very stressful for someone who is older to have to be a caregiver because they are already dealing with other stresses of old age such as losing their spouses, not having a lot of energy, and worrying about their own health.…

My experiences serving others have exposed me to the issues my community faces and have shown me that I can make a difference. My first experience working with underserved populations in my community was serving food at Union Station Homeless Services’ Thanksgiving Dinner in the Park in high school. This made me step out of my comfort zone and interact with a group I was unfamiliar with. Through serving food and interacting with homeless and low-income families, I saw that my small actions could brighten one’s day. This inspired me to start Heal L.A. at UCLA with some of my classmates. We wanted to help the significant homeless population surrounding our campus in any way possible. What started as buying meals and conversing with them has grown…
