Sexual Assault On Campus Essay
It has to stop. Throughout college 11.2% of the students on campus experience rape or some form of campus assault before they graduate (RAINN, n.d). Everyone’s views on sexual assault differs and that is because there are so many different classifications of campus assault. Why are the numbers increasing when they should be decreasing? Why are the victims of campus assault so afraid to seek help? No two people would give you the same answer if asked the question “what is sexual assault?.” Many people would reply and say that it is rape, but it is so much more than just rape. Anyone can be a victim of campus assault. It is more common for a woman to be a victim, but men can still be victimized by this crime (The National Center for Victims of Crime, n.d.). Sexual assault can happen anywhere and to anyone, no sexual assault experience is the same as another. The increased attention to this matter is due to the seriousness of some recent cases that have been published by the media. Such as the Brock Turner case in 2016 and the case at the University of Minnesota also in 2016; cases such as these have given campuses no choice except to stand up to what is happening right in front of them (Brown, Merten, 2017). The surge of social media use over the years has made spreading awareness for assault easier than ever. Organizations, celebrities, politicians and everyone in between can share their story and spread their views with the click of a button.
