It is important for all practitioners to be good communicators in early years settings, to help build relationships with children and their parents. When children start a new setting it can be a daunting time for them and their parents, by giving a smile and saying hello you are building the foundations for a good relationship. It is as important to maintain these new relationships , particularly as these children are trusting you and their parents are trusting you whilst they are in your care. Showing an interest in what children have to say or what their parents have to say about their children before and after a session is a good way to maintain a relationship you have.…

Because of this, it's important that child practitioners can listen carefully and help children to learn how to express themselves and also provide what they need.…

Without having good communication we wouldn’t be able to gain good information, form relationships, and even maintain friendships. Babies and children reply on adults to be good interpreters of their body language and first words. To be able to communicate effectively with professionals helps to work together in the interest of the children’s wellbeing. Children can easily pick up on poor relationships and negativity which could result in the child becoming unsettled and anxious if they do sense tension in the setting. Communication is also essential for all children’s learning and social development. As a practitioner in an early years setting they have a vital role in supporting communication development of all children especially those who tend to have speech problems or a communication disability. There are projects out there to help children such as the Effective Provision of Pre-School Education (EPPE) and Peers Early Education Partnership (PEEP). These projects highlight that long term impacts that high quality early years provisions can impact on young children. Communication in childcare is one of the best ways to provide the best care for the child on both ends - for parents and providers. Although this is a really good way to provide the best care for the child but it makes it easier to build a relationship between parents and other professionals. Good communications skills help to build better relationships. Relationships are influenced by the way I communicate, not only with the words I choose to say but also with my facial expressions and body language. I can tell somebody I’m happy as much as I want to but unless it’s accompanied with a smile nobody will believe me. Communication is important when working with children, I have to exchange information regarding the child with their parent/carer and also update our colleagues. It is important when a child is new to the setting to be able to quickly build a relationship with the child, help them to feel at ease and secure, so they’re…

Effective communication is extremely important in developing positive relationships. If we communicate effectively this will allow children and young people to learn boundaries and expectations. As childcare providers it is important that we model effective communication with other people. For example in a stressful or excitable situation we need to think about our own communication verbally and non-verbally so as to encourage others to do the same. If we practice this, we will form positive relationships with children, young people and adults as they will feel that can communicate back to ourselves and others. If we do not communicate effectively other people will not trust us and will not be taught effective communication themselves.…
