Effects on the Brain
The levels of natural chemical messenger dopamine circuiting the brain controlling pleasure and movement are increased when your body is under the influence of cocaine. Normally, in response to potential rewards, like the smell of good food the brain releases dopamine in these circuits. It then recycles back into the cell that released it, shutting off the signal between nerve cells. Excessive amounts of dopamine are build up between nerve cells as cocaine prevents it from recycling. Ultimately, Normal brain communication is disrupted by this flood of dopamine and causes cocaine’s high.
