Short Story: A Hero's Journey
Sam is riding his bike into the oblivion. He’s surreptitiously trailing forward to the great unknown, wanting to pursue a passion that so evidently lacks support from his kith and kin. He seems unsure of this spontaneous flee; the way he dubiously glances over his shoulder, conveys his reluctance to overtake his concealed passions. The path he’s taking is coated with puddles and indents; this represents his journey in confessing his ambitions to himself and family. His journey was filled with damaging words of verbal abuse from those who loved him too much to let go, his parents; their best bet in holding their son back was to tear him down with deprecative untruths and “you’re not good enoughs.” He started to believe these things, but his ambition was too robust to mask. Sam headed for the road without a goodbye because that goodbye would have been the only truly effective way to dismantle his ambition. Sam keeps looking back to …show more content…
Sam wasn’t chased after because in the end, he is the only one with the ambition and the only one who can pursue it or not pursue it. His dream didn’t belong to his parents, friends or lovers; Sam was the only one who was capable of making that ultimatum. The path Sam is traveling on sequesters him from other people’s insights; there are no palpable signs or other individuals that could possibly influence his ultimatum. All he sees ahead of him is a continuous oblivion. The bike he’s traveling on has acquired a coat of rust, which represents his abrupt revelation of his passions that have been oxidized and dampened by his parent’s discontent. The bike is still flourishing, just like Sam’s ambitions. In the distance, the sun is setting, painting the far unknown with joyous pigments of pink, yellow and blue. Even though Sam is reluctant of his flee to pursue his ambitions, the outcome of the sun setting sky shows hope and euphoria when he reaches his

Western and nonwestern heroes come from different regions of the world; therefore, have different cultural backgrounds. More specifically, western heroes come from the Greco-Roman or Judeo-Christian traditions. Nonwestern heroes come from other parts of the world that would not associate with these traditions. While these heroes might seem to have little in common when it comes to origin, “The Hero’s Journey” by Joseph Campbell demonstrates that all heroes have “similar patterns” (Campbell). However by examining the non-western hero, Mulan, in “The Ballad of Mulan” demonstrates how this figure is different than the hero outlined in Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey” in the following ways, Mulan does not have any kind of “supernatural aid”, “tests that lead to the final showdown”, or a “life-changing experience for her or many others” (Campbell).…

Without knowing literature has been seldom following the same archetype, The Hero’s Journey. Joseph Campbell discovered that most stories follow this pattern which is why he dubbed it the monomyth. Through years of studying he found that this popular motif is made up of ten basic steps that a hero follows through a story. Well known film writer and director George Lucas molded the film Star Wars around Campbell’s monomyth not only with intent but quite distinctively. Lucas is not the only one doing this in Hollywood either, many screenwriters and directors have caught on to this including Andrew Stanton as he depicted his version of the monomyth in Finding Nemo.
