32 “Well its actually happening ma’, I’m goin’ back to school.”Rufus said. “I want you to know, I truly am proud of you Rufus.” His mother replied. Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways. Allison who used to have a big crush on Rufus sat right next to him. Mitchell and Charlie sat across from him and Christina, Alisha and Sammy sat around them. When the bell rang he went to his locker and when he got to class he looked out the window and saw the same car that followed him to school. The only person he thought of was Simon. But he didn’t have a car? Rufus ran to the office to explain the…

The gas consumed his lungs growing tighter each second. Not even I could imagine the pain that was growing in him. The whites of his eyes glowed amongst the blood that was starting to evolve around the creases of his lips. His hand opening and closing, his fingertips searching for something to clasp onto to stop the pain… they fall upon the hem of my pants with a grip of an eagle. As he held my pants for his refuge the words he mumbled will never leave me. ‘Tel…tell them…tell them I said bye’. As his body became limp on my feet the words and noise of the other men became apparent again.…

The steam from his drink coated his glasses, and behind the mug I could see a toothless smile and a dark shiny grey beard. He gestured for my dad and I to come in. I stepped my way up into the overcrowded room full of mustard yellow couches. Not only did the place looked run down, and about to fall apart but, the place smelled like the worst mixture of rotten foods you could imagine. My dad and I’s facial expressions to each other said it all about this place. Once we had found our way, we filled out some application forms. My body is under attack. An attack I am all too familiar with. It feels as if an explosive has detonated in my head. I am disoriented and struggling to get my thoughts together. The pain is intense and crippling. I tilt my head back, and rest it on the headboard hoping for relief. I shut my eyes, and gently place my hands on my temples. As I begin to massage my temples, the invader silently enters into my thoughts and begins to taunt me, “You deserve everything you get, he whispers”. “It doesn’t matter how you try to escape me, I will be here. I will be here today, tomorrow, and for the remainder of your life”. Trying to ignore the whisper, I grab two Advil off the nearby nightstand, and wash them down with a sip of coffee. I squeeze my eyes tight, and begin to feel tears burn the back of my eyelids. My thoughts begin to become tainted with feelings of despair, hopelessness and sorrow. I open my eyes, and standing within arm’s reach of me, is my ten year old son. I choke back my tears, force myself to smile and reach out for a hug.…

Not realizing that only half of the school day had passed, I sat in the school parking lot for two hours. By the time I got out of bed and into the bathroom to shower it had been 7 45 am, almost 8 am. I had an hour to get to my school. We lived ten minutes away from Devon shire elementary school in Des Plaines. By the time I was done and ready to leave the house it was 8 30 am. My dad had promised the day before that he would come to drop me off to my classroom in the morning. Just like he had promised, he walked with me to the school. I told him, “I don’t want to go to school, I don’t know English, and I don’t know anyone, I don’t want to go to school.” My dad didn’t reply to what I had said he just walked holding my hand. It was 8 45 am when we turned the corner and saw all the kids outside playing. As we walked closer to the crowd of students my dad saw someone he recognized and he told me to wait there for him to come back. I stood up like a statue- who can hear all children screaming, and who can see children waving to their…
