Should Athletes Be Paid?
The United States is referred to as “The land of the free and the home of the brave” in The Star Spangled Banner. Without our armed forces to fight in battle, we would not have the freedoms to do anything that we do now, including playing sports. Many athletic players receive more money than most soldiers do. Many agree that athletes should, but I beg to differ. I think a man with a helmet defending his country should make more money than a man with a helmet defending a football. Football players make more money than soldiers do, they get thousands of dollars every game, hit, touchdown, or kick-off of each season. The Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback, Matt Ryan, gets paid $11,500,000 just as a base salary, while the highest ranking Officer, O-10*, gets paid $20220.07 each year after serving for a little less than 38 years. This means that the average athletic player receives about $11,479,779.93 more than the highest ranking officer in the army does. How could this possibly be fair to soldiers? Armed forces, that fight to protect our country, are getting …show more content…

Football, baseball, hockey, golf, soccer, volleyball, tennis, basketball, and many other sports have players that have died trying to play something the chose to play and do things they wanted to do. Soldiers go into war, or battle, to help protect you and your family. Without soldiers, how would we feel safe enough to play sports? How would we feel safe enough to go out and watch a game while cheering our loved ones on? Sports are a fun activity for everyone to enjoy and play, so why do professional ball players get paid so much when U.S. soldiers are risking their lives to protect this land? Many say sport players are important and should earn loads of cash, but I do not agree. Athletes should get paid enough money for them to be able to retire and raise a family, but not as much as the people protecting them, not to mention all of our homes and

Well except for the fact that players don’t get paid for their labor. If you look at it players should see at least little part of whatever money they generate, for example Texas A&M start quarterback Jonny Manzel is said to be responsible for close to 2.5 million dollars in revenue generated for the school alone. Because of TV, merchandise, tickets sales and him just playing there Texas A&M gets that much extra money. He doesn’t get anything from it, in fact most college athletes are struggling money wise while on campus. Coaches on the other hand, since players can’t get paid the coaches make 6 and sometimes 7 figures. John Kalipary, the head coach at Kentucky University has a 4 million dollar salary. This just isn’t fair to the student athlete and I think they should have some sort of compensation for all that they…

Why should college athletes be paid to participate in their sports? College athletes are awarded tuition free college due to their hard work and athletic abilities, why should they get paid extra money outside of their tuition being paid? Student athletes in college only have two jobs while they are attending, to learn and become a better and smarter athlete. These student athletes don’t need extra money outside of having their tuition, room and board, and food paid for. They are also given clothing which takes away another money based need. These student athletes are given much more than other students and yet they still believe that they should be paid for their extra work outside of their performances. The main reason is because they are already paid through their scholarships to go to school and play sports. Other reasons to this opinion is to maintain their amatuer status, difficult…

NFL players win the superbowl and they get paid; they get paid everyday because of a contract. College athletes have the choice if they want to do a sport in college but they have to try out. If they make the team then they represent their school and when it gets to the NFL combine their school is represented. I think college athletes should be paid for everything they do. Just like what Carmelo Anthony said, if we don’t solve this problem college basketball and all college sports will begin to go down.…

Professional athletes are persons who do sports for a living. These are people who earn on the average $48, 310 per year, though top athletes can earn millions even in just one game. The topmost earner is Tiger Woods who earns $80.3 million per year (Forbes 2004) and Michael Schumacher who earns $80 million (Forbes 2004). Because of the exuberant salaries that high-ranking professional athletes receive and the above-average salary that most professional athletes get, the salaries of such athletes have been put into public scrutiny. Do they receive such salaries when professionals such as teachers, lawyers, policemen, or doctors who do a lot of service to the community…

Imagine this: you are in the military force, you risk your life on a day-to-day basis for our country's freedom. If you survive fighting, you sleep on an uncomfortable, rock hard bed and eat nauseating food. You work your tail off, yet you actually make less than the average American does yearly. Now, take into perspective, perhaps a professional boxer: they may risk their lives, but it's for our entertainment, not for our safety. When they are done wrestling, they go back to their five star hotels and eat gourmet food. They train, and yes, they may have worked hard to get to where they are, but they're out here making millions per fight, which is way more than what the average American makes. Look closer, should an entertainer really get paid such a profound amount for one fight, rather than those who work to…

Athletes with very little time on their hands are not making money off their beloved job. Over decades, there have been athletes pouring their heart and soul into their sport that they have worked for. For years, the love of the game has gotten almost each and every elite athlete to a university where they can showcase their ability and talent. However, for the Division 1 level it is more or less a business, and your job is to bring in as much profit to your university as you can. Regardless of the business, a true athlete will play the game with a desire to win in their hearts. In recent years there has been controversial question as to which every athlete is thinking. Should student athletes who play a sport get an extra benefit by being paid because they are a college athlete?…

In conclusion, soldiers should not deserve as much as athletes. This is for the same reason as it would not be possible to pay them as much as pros. The professional athletes again, should make much more because the government does not have enough to pay our soldiers, they have just as much training, and they get paid from different sources to get paid what they…

It has been a debate for quite some time as to whether college athletes should be paid for their work on the field. They are some of the hardest working individuals that obtain intense practices and demanding college courses, and many believe that they should be rewarded for their hard work. But the ongoing debate is whether it is right to pay these players as if they were employees. Many major colleges provide the best services for their athletes by providing them with the greatest gyms to workout in, free health insurance for injuries, transportation, food, equipment, and most of the time, a full four-year scholarship. On top of all of these things that are provided, does it seem right to be paying these students as well? Determination and motivation for greatness during college should be enough; therefore, I don’t think that college athletes should be paid.…

According to researches the fifteen highest paid college football coaches’ salary is $53.4 million combined. That is $3.56 million for each of them annually. The most expensive college in the United States is Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y and it costs $57,556 a year to go there. Even if you get scholarships for it, it is still nowhere close to $3 million a year. They shouldn’t get paid $3 million a year but getting paid even a little bit would be good. Is it fair that the coaches get paid and the players don’t, according to researches most people don’t think so. Why do coaches get paid, because they train teams to succeed them and that is their jobs. But don’t the players do the same thing, they play for a team to succeed the team and that is their jobs. If you think about it makes sense, but if you think it’s not a job then they should get a job to support them and put football, basketball, etc. second. If they do that, college football or basketball wouldn’t be that great and people wouldn’t enjoy it as much as they do now.…

Imagine a star of a college basketball team. They take their team to the championship game and win the game. Their jerseys are selling like crazy and their school is bringing in millions of dollars off of their work. In any other situation they would be a millionaire with a fancy house and car. But not if they are a college athlete because they don't get paid. Even though their school made a lot of money off their blood, sweat, and tears they still don't get paid one penny. There is no doubt that college athletes should be paid. They should be paid because they work hard and put their bodies on the line, they would make college sports more competitive, and they also bring in hundreds of millions of dollars.…
