Sectionalism Essay
In American History we are currently studying the concept of sectionalism. Sectionalism is division within a country based on regional beliefs and interests. In the early to mid 1800’s, sectionalism in America grew as slavery divided the Nation. Slavery was ignored, compromised, and argued about by the states until the conflict drove our country into the Civil War. Although regional differences are not as distinct these days, many issues are currently causing division among the states and people of our country. These issues lead to what our history class describes as “modern sectionalism.” One such issue is if college athletes should be paid. In an article by www.si.com Oklahoma City Thunder Carmelo Anthony discussed with reporters about the …show more content…
He’s right, if we don’t fix this problem college basketball will continuously go down. I personally think that college athletes should get paid because they are representing their college and they are on t.v so everyone is going to see how good the college is. It’s not just basketball athletes that should be paid, it should be all athletes in all sports even if they play more than one sport. For example the University of Michigan has won over 11 national championships and none of those players have been paid. They have won over 11 championships on live t.v without pay. NFL players win the superbowl and they get paid; they get paid everyday because of a contract. College athletes have the choice if they want to do a sport in college but they have to try out. If they make the team then they represent their school and when it gets to the NFL combine their school is represented. I think college athletes should be paid for everything they do. Just like what Carmelo Anthony said, if we don’t solve this problem college basketball and all college sports will begin to go down. College football coaches are overpaid and some of the money they get should go to the players because yes the coach does the coaching but it’s the players who decide to go and give their best to win championships and games. There have been many professional athletes that agree with me that college athletes should be paid. Some of the professional athletes are quarterback A.J Mccarron, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, running back Adrian Peterson, and lastly NBA player Carmelo Anthony. My plan is that college athletes will get money and they will sign one year contracts with the college incase they don’t want to do that sport the next year. The money will come from part of the coach’s paycheck and part of the fee that college students pay when they go to college. Right now many student athletes are mad because they don’t get paid and many professional athletes are

The side I agree with is pros, which means yes college athletes should get paid. I think this because they should get the money the need. I say this because college athletes will have to do two things, And it may come to having to leave your sport activity early or quitting the job, And do you really want to do any of those? Also because they maybe have a family to take care of and they can't do it without money right? Maybe even have a family member that's hurt/ dieing/ or even dead. And you have to go to the funeral or go help them and see if they're doing ok.…

All in all, college football players deserve to make some sort of money. They put an insane amount of time into practicing and getting better. They give immense effort to the sport, and lastly they bring in millions of dollars to the college that they don't see at all. College football players need to be…

Well except for the fact that players don’t get paid for their labor. If you look at it players should see at least little part of whatever money they generate, for example Texas A&M start quarterback Jonny Manzel is said to be responsible for close to 2.5 million dollars in revenue generated for the school alone. Because of TV, merchandise, tickets sales and him just playing there Texas A&M gets that much extra money. He doesn’t get anything from it, in fact most college athletes are struggling money wise while on campus. Coaches on the other hand, since players can’t get paid the coaches make 6 and sometimes 7 figures. John Kalipary, the head coach at Kentucky University has a 4 million dollar salary. This just isn’t fair to the student athlete and I think they should have some sort of compensation for all that they…

While other students can go get jobs and earn money, college…

In the article that I read I would have to agree with the author. College players should be paid, just because some of them get free education don’t mean that they shouldn’t get paid. College players are just like professional players there’s really no difference now. College athletes bring in more money than the professionals.…

Should college athletes be paid? Some people think they should, here are some reasons why some think that college athletes should be paid. First, paying athletes would put an end to black market in paying players by giving them special luxuries for college. Next, paying athletes give an incentive to stay and finish their schooling instead of leaving early to play professionally. Lastly, coaches make an average of 1 million dollars every year while the athletes are playing and taking the health risks.…

In conclusion, college athletes should be paid. As previously stated in the words of NCAA President Mark Emmert, “I think not paying athletes is tradition and also there would be less fans at games if they were paid.” Paying athletes would not cause fewer fan to attend games. They need money to get them started just in case they don’t make it to the professional level of their sport, which most don’t. In conclusion I believe College athletes should get paid for their risk of playing the game they…

The reason I think student athletes should be getting paid is because , enterprises gone mad with TV contracts and multi-million-dollar coaches who earn vastly more than the world’s best professors . The coach also noted that the university of michigan just signed a 66.5 million agreement granting adidas sole right to garb the school’s athletes and the NCAA last year signed a 14 year , 11 billion TV contract just to televise the basketball tournament. They don’t know whether universities should end the charade and switch to hired teams. But at least branch has raised an issue that should cause major debate in academia. College athletes should be paid because some coaches signed a 66.5 million agreement , sports universities should stop pretending…

Over the past decades, what has continued to be one of the most debatable issues in the world of sports is whether or not college football players should get paid. My honest opinion is football that players should receive a certain proportion of money because of the service that college athletes provide to the institution they attend. In addition, they should be rewarded in a reasonable manner after putting their bodies out on the line, bringing in a tremendous amount of money, it will help with the football athletes to begin creating a sense of financial awareness, and finally it will attract more talented athletes.…

Student athletes in college should not get paid as much as professionals but a smaller portion would be appreciated. The small portion would help the student athletes a lot with tuition if they have to pay for school. If they don’t have to pay for tuition and have full ride scholarships then it would help them pay for classes and books for those classes. One more thing that that small amount of money the student athletes should be paid would help with is not having to work or have another job off campus or away from the college the student athlete is attending. In the end, there are no question that the colleges should pay their…

I strongly believe that college athletes shouldn’t be paid because they're still amateurs at the sport. They aren’t professionals at the sport. Even though their in college they are still learning and they need to pass school then start getting a job to make money. If you compare college amateurs to professionals there will be a big difference and observe why they get paid it will make a lot of sense. According to the text it says “A gentleman never competes for money,” Walter Camp wrote in his 1893 handbook on college sports.”…

College football is a multi - billion dollar industry and everyone gets paid except for the players the ones that actually play in the games. Although the players are not employees they should get paid. Imagine you're a full time student and you're working at a full time job and for all of your hard work and dedication you help your company make lots of money but out of all that money that you help make you get none of it. But your boss and all the people with higher positions than you gets paid. Now for a student athlete in college a famous sport is a full time job because all you do is go to school and go to practice and you have team meetings and you also have homework . Student athletes are a big part of universities income and it's…
