College athletes getting paid is a big issue because it leads to many question on if they do get paid or don’t. If college athletes got paid they would have to deal with how much they should get paid and who gets paid the most. But many that say they should get paid is because they raise a lot of money for their schools and Tv programs. They also say they should because they don’t have enough money to afford food and things they need. I agree they do need extra money but everybody thats in college are not athletes.

They get a scholarship to play their sport but they have to chose what job field they want to do incase going pro don’t workout. By them playing football their education is basically free with a scholarship and that is how they will receive a real job and get paid. “These schools should facilitate the educations of student-athletes through scholarship grants, but not through a system of salaries dependent on supply and demand, which ultimately detracts a student-athlete from picking a school, and detracts them from attending a school, for the right reasons”(Meshefejian). Students getting paid would distract them by which school pay their athletes the most. Them getting paid would also be a hard decision on who gets paid the most.
Students go to college to learn not get paid to play a sport.
But college athletes are a big part of school spirit and everyone loves college sports. They play because they love the sport and it’s not a job. If they wanted to get paid they would try their hardest to make it to the NFL or NBA. College Athletes attend college to get better

In the article “7 Common Sense Reasons Why College Athletes Should Be Paid,” the author, Maurice Peebles conducts an interview with Jay Bilas to get his input on whether college athletes should be paid. He shares how the NCAA is a multi-billon dollar business that limits athletes in particular on earning money. Also, he gives examples of different perspectives that people can relate to in different industries of how this situation would apply to them. Furthermore, he explains that college athletes would benefit more from being paid and it would require them to get a better education by not allowing them to leave college early to go onto the professional stage. The school’s are benefitting much more than the players are because the players are the reason why all of this money is coming in, the schools are just being represented and then paid. The scholarships given do not equal to what some college athletes are worth, because some out there could easily…

We often look at college athletes as miniature stars. The question is, why should student’s athlete get a paycheck for playing amateur level sports? Athletes complain about how they do not get enough for playing a sport. They are forgetting that they are being rewarded with a half or full scholarship. The main goal for these athletes is being academically successful. Not who has the best jump shot or who fumbled a ball, that does not matter. The essence of playing college level has been taken out of place, now replaced with the mindsets of professional athletes. Did they forget? You are not professionals. The love of the game has been through extortion for the love of money. Paying college athletes will lead the students astray from what they attended the institution to accomplish in the first place, that is, to earn a degree, not to gain a compensation.…

They are already getting a scholar ship and get money to pay for their tuition and all of their books. The college administration say that they do not need to pay college athletes. Instead of policing an underground economy, the NCAA could focus on improving academic performance and graduation rates. (Schwarz and Rascher). This is why college athletes should not be compensated.…

At some colleges, college athletics are a key source of income, and they attract students to their institutions. Universities depend on their athletes to produce and maintain the popularity of their school's name. College athletes are suppose to be the best of the best on that level, so why do college athletes not get paid? The National Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA, says that it is trying to protect the athletes from "exploitation by professional and commercial enterprises" (Brawn). Many argue that student athletes should not be paid because they are receiving an education through a scholarship. These people feel that the promise of their education being paid for is enough for the college athletes. On the opposite side of the issue, people argue that the college athlete generates enough income for the universities, and they feel that the university owes the athletes more than a scholarship. Student athletes should be given a small stipend for their services to the university.…

Imagine spending hours and hours a week working as hard as you can at a very hard task and getting almost nothing in return. This is what college athletes go through when they voluntarily play for their school. More of their time is spent on their sport per week than on education. Some of the college sports require very hard mental and physical work that could possibly result in a future career. Also collegiate sport organizations have millions to even billions of dollars that could be spared for the players that help keep it going. This is why I think college athletes should receive compensation for their skills. It would help the players continue on in life if they don't proceed of career in being a professional athlete and they work too hard to not get paid.…

In some cases,a college’s athletic program is its main source of income. For example they can make money on selling items that show the athletes’ names or pictures on them; they sell tickets to the sporting events; and they get many donations from alumni and other fans and companies which want to support the athletes. Even though the colleges make money on all these things, they share none of it with the athletes. If it were not for the athletes, the school would not make money on any of those things. The college would not suffer financially if they gave each athlete a small salary in addition to their scholarship. The salary might make the athlete happier about playing the sport and they would try harder while playing or practicing. The practices or training that are required of the players consume most of their time – even in the off season they still have some sort of training.…

One reason why student athletes should not be paid is the fact that the college experience should be payment enough. In the article, “College Athletes Should Not Be Paid” found in the book Sports and Athletes, the author talks about “the primary function of academic institutions is to educate, and not to hire student-athletes for their contributions on the basketball court or football field” (Meshefejian 99). When high school athletes are approached for their profound athletic abilities, they often choose the university that will open the door for them to pursue a professional career rather than what will provide them with an exceptional education. Meshefejian makes the following statement to prove why students should not be paid for their athletic abilities:…

Paying college athletes has been a controversy for over a century, dating back to what is considered to be the first intercollegiate competition. Fact is college athletes want to get paid beyond a scholarship. Yes, scholarships pay for the student’s tuition, books, classes, living expenses, etc., but they have no money to buy clothes, pay for parking, food, etc. Expecting the players to get paid millions of dollars is obviously unrealistic, but paying them as if it was a full time job, at least minimum wage is adequate enough. For the 15 highest paid coaches in Division 1, together they bring in around $100,000,000 every year.…

If college athletes were paid there wouldn’t be nearly as much money for the sport department itself because all of the money would go to paying the players. And there would be bias from popular sports like basketball and football between the least popular sports like field hockey and swimming. The more popular sports would get more money and the least popular sports would be left hanging to dry. College coaches get paid a lot and the players see that and tend to be greedy about money. Players behavior could change ad a result of the salaries as well, and not for the better.…

Many people think that it is unfair that the student-athletes make their college money and yet the students see none of it. For instance, Veazey states, "Sept.02--In 2010-11, the University of Memphis men's basketball team brought in $16.7 million. Will Barton, who spent 18 hours that year playing for the Tigers and hundreds of hours practicing and preparing for those games, saw none of it" (Veazey). One main belief on the topic is that the student-athletes should receive money for making their college millions. On the other hand, the colleges use their income to support the sports teams with healthcare, supplements, etc. The student-athletes already receive thousands of dollars towards their college payments, as well as many other benefits for their hard work. College sports is not a profession to make money, it is an amateur…
