Should Professional Athletes Be Paid Essay
Think about how nice it’d be if a person could earn money without ever doing their job. That’s how it is for many athletes who sit on the bench and don’t play a single game, yet are paid millions of dollars anyways. Professional athletes are paid way too much for the careers they have chosen. Careers that are beneficial to our society have a lower pay grade than the majority of these athletes. The President of the United States annual pay of $400,000, is less than most athletes pay. Also, the highest paid doctor makes an average of $500,000 annually, and the highest level of a NASA astronaut makes roughly $107,000 per year. For instance, an athlete being paid to play their sport with a contract of at least $19 million makes more than the average …show more content…
With the large amounts of money athletes make, covering these costs would be a simple matter. Also, the majority of athletes are ineligible for insurance due to their high medical bills which leaves them to fall on their own budget for health issues and financial problems even after retirement. Professional athletes play these sports knowing the risk that they’re putting themselves through, yet don’t quit for their own safety. When athletes are injured they go through the cost of their medical treatment, which for them isn’t that hard to pay no matter how expensive the treatment. Doctors save countless lives everyday, firemen put their life on the line everyday, yet athletes sit through their games and are still paid more than the others. The doctors fixing the injuries for athletes are paid less than their patients. The lawyer that was hired to help sort through their financials and try to help the athletes out of bankruptcy are paid less than their clients. These athletes are paid too much and if anything happens to them, or takes away their source of income they hire hard-working members of society to fix their problems, yet they’re still paid

Being an athlete in college means you contribute about 40 hours to your sport. They have a full time college schedule with studying, mandatory classes, and let’s not forget practice. According to an article, “If the average NCAA college football player in division one spends over 40 hours a week on their game, then they are working the same amount as those in full time employment do”(Listland 1). Since 40 hours are dedicated to the game, that takes up a lot of time in schedules. The athletes also have to take mandatory classes and have time to study. Imagine spending hours and hours a week working as hard as you can at a very hard task and getting almost nothing in return. This is what college athletes go through when they voluntarily play for their school. More of their time is spent on their sport per week than on education. Some of the college sports require very hard mental and physical work that could possibly result in a future career. Also collegiate sport organizations have millions to even billions of dollars that could be spared for the players that help keep it going. This is why I think college athletes should receive compensation for their skills. It would help the players continue on in life if they don't proceed of career in being a professional athlete and they work too hard to not get paid.…

Even though college athletes receive many luxuries they still have to make there own living and support themselves. As reported by “Pay or Scholarship” written by Teengagement, it states, “Athletes are employees because they work under the control of the college.” As many people know a business has employees, if an athlete can be considered an employee to the college shouldn't they be paid like and employee? Everyone in the world has expenses they need to pay -granted a college athlete has housing and meals and all that stuff- however many of them still need money to buy things such as: toiletries, new clothes, gas, and spending money.…

There are thousands of athletes playing for different colleges. They put their time and effort in it, yet they don’t get paid. This happens for the fact that, again, the people in this country tend to care about having fun rather than anything else. Another reason as to why the amount of money that athletes receive is ludicrous is that, “...retired athletes can go on to have lucrative jobs,” (Edelman 24). Being involved in lucrative jobs means always making tons of money, and more than almost everyone else. “...there are plenty of people who have difficult and dangerous jobs, and no one is handing them exorbitant amounts of money,” (Edelman 24). As to why people do not pay people who work strenuously becomes lost upon the vast majority of people, but I believe that it is for the fact that no one actually cares about them. All in all, the fact that people who gallop around all day, and still acquire millions of dollars, is a truly disturbing truth that burdens us…

Also buying super expensive food, drinks, and stuff at the gift shops at the games goes to the players as well (bleacher report). For example, a golden state…
