Is it the time when Prostitution should be legalized in India?
Legalization of prostitution is the debate which does requires a deep evaluation. The prostitution practices vary from country to country. While in some countries it is legalized, whereas in some it is treated as a huge crime. We see exploitation on the name of prostitution as well as there comes the freedom of choice to opt any profession with free will as well as freedom to live life with dignity. These issues raises the question as whether a nation should legalize prostitution or not? Today sex industry is constitutiong a huge business. Worldwide today this practice produces over $100 Billion in revenue annually.There are approximately 10 million sex workers in India out of which 100,000 are in Mumbai alone which constitutes the Asia’s largest sex industry in the world (Robert I. Freidman, India’s Shame: Sexual Slavery and Political Corruption Are Leading to An AIDS Catastrophe, The Nation, CATW, 1996). India is a nation which is known for its culture and values throughout the world. The practices of sex work in India is prevalent since time immemorial and with the dynamic nature of society the practices of sex workers has also gone through different phases. Recently, Hon’ble Supreme Court has also expressed its concerns over the need of modifications in prostitution laws.Now, it is the time to have a serious debate and rethink that whether the country like India should move towards legalizing the prostitution or not?
This research paper examines the present laws dealing with the prostitution in India. The study of laws prevalent in different countries and how it has effected the socio- economic conditions of those particular nations. The steps which may be prove suitable in country like India will be discuss in detail to analyze as what stand India should take
