Should Students Be Allowed To Bear Arms On College Campuses?

The deadliest mass killing by a single shooter in the United States history was on April 16, 2007, were a Virginia Tech senior shot and killed thirty-two innocent people and injured another seventeen on the university’s campus. This tragic shooting led to the first federal gun legislation in thirteen years (Skorton, Altschuler 628). Over the past five years’ shootings on U.S. campuses have more than doubled per a report released in October 2016 by a criminal justice reform organization. In recent debates the nation rages about gun control and the main question is, should college campus allowed students to carry concealed weapons? Do guns really hold a place on college, and school campuses?

Students who have guns will be more tempted to use them, particularly at colleges and universities that are full of drug use, stress, and anxiety. College aged students are also at risk for mental health challenges and suicide risk. The combination of guns into a formula like that is simply not favorable for a safe learning environment. Campuses should be a safe place where students can grow, openly express themselves and learn in an environment free from the risk of gunfire and violence. Guns on campus would distract the student from the learning experience they deserve. Students may withhold their opinions during class discussions in fear of offending another classmate. This can also affect how instructors’ grades students work or presents their lecture to a classroom full of armed students. Many Americans believe that guns hold no place at our colleges and universities.
