One example is that they are the ones who found out that cigarettes are bad for our health. Part 2 states, “Today, the fact that smoking causes lung cancer may seem obvious. But scientists had to do research for many years to compare smokers to non smokers.” This evidence proves that the NIEHS not only helps out the environmental health but it also helps by finding out causes to certain disease. If the NIEHS stops being funded then we will continue to do harm to ourselves and our environment without even knowing it. Part 2 also states, “Environmental health research studies are valuable, but they have limits. Diseases such as cancer may not show up in our bodies for many years, so people may be exposed for a really long time before a problem is spotted. With the money that they are asking for you would think that they can find out what causes these diseases quicker. According to part 2, paragraph 5, “So another important research method is the testing in animals...Mice and rats may show signs of health problems after only 2 years or so.” This shows that they are in the process of figuring it out and in a not to distant future they will for sure have the answer to these types of sicknesses. If they do manage to do so then there will be no excuse for the U.S government to stop funding their program.
