Should We Eat Meat Laura Fraser Analysis
Should We Eat Meat? In the article “Why I Stopped Being a Vegetarian,” Laura Fraser discusses the reasons why she became a vegetarian and why she chooses not to follow the same lifestyle after fifteen years. Fraser examines that during the time she was a vegetarian, she was missing the one protein she wanted the most, which was meat. Fraser wasn’t strict when it came to her being a vegetarian. She considered herself as a pesco-ovo-lacto-vegetarian because she ate diary product and eggs, as well as fish. When Fraser began to eat meat she soon realized that everyone who eats meat should eat less of it. I agree with Fraser that we should eat less meat. However, I disagree with the reasons why people become vegetarian. Eating less meat is not going to solve all the problems in the world but it can have a positive impact such as the environment rational. Fraser stated, “If Americans just ate less meat – like driving cars less often – the problem could be alleviated without giving up meat entirely. (698). This approach has worked for centuries and continues to work in America and Europe. The problem isn’t meat, but too much meat. (698). The way we eat meat and how often we eat it can cause a major effect on the environment. The more meat Americans eat, the more animals’ …show more content…
Health concerns or religious reasons guide some people to this belief. I respect everyone reasons, but I don’t agree with this one. Fraser stated “There’s a lot of evidence that vegetarians live longer, have lower cholesterol levels and have a slim chance of obesity and heart rate disease.” (Fraser, 689). Vegan and vegetarians believe that meat is bad for humans, which is not true. Unprocessed meat is just as healthy as vegetables and fruits because it contains high quality of complete protein. Consuming protein from meat is important because it contains many nutrients and the amino acids we need that our body cannot

The Vegetarian Myth, written by author Lierre Keith, tackles the ever-heated question: To eat animal products or not to eat animal products? I add the word “products,” after animal because the book should more properly be called the vegan myth. As a former vegan of over twenty years Keith comes from a place of experience, or as she might have it, a bitter experience. Feeling betrayed, in denial, and physically ill from her vegan years, she has made it her goal to reveal the truth and put to rest the Vegetarian notion that abstaining from animal products is the righteous path that is morally correct, will feed the hungry, and lead to greater nutrition. Chapter one, titled “Why This Book” will be the focus of this analysis because it gives an appropriate introduction to Keith’s…

Plants are rich in nutrients and vitamins and vegetarian eaters have a longer life span than the non-vegetarians. Plant kingdom is reach in, texture flavor and color. As Michael Pollan speaks of what Professor Joan Sabate, has researched “Sabate has done studies, comparing the longevity of both kinds of Adventists meat-eaters and vegetarians. He’s found that vegetarian Adventists live three to four years longer than non-vegetarian ones and six to nine years longer than the rest of us” (1:20:02-01:20:20). Meat should be eaten only in moderate amount and occasionally, as Michael Pollan depicts “Study shows that the more red meat you eat, the greater your risk of getting heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers” (01:16:09-01:16:17).…

It has been argued that meat has high sources of energy, minerals, and proteins in the human diet. It is rich in proteins which have shown to have a high energy unit as compared to other food types. Proponents of meat consumption support its consumption as it has a greater nutritional value and is good to the test buds. Apart from the nutritional reasons, it is also thought meat consumption maintains the ecosystem at equilibrium. If meat consumption was to stop, it is thought that animals like cattle, sheep, goats and poultry will multiply to levels that are ecological disastrous. As most of these animals are herbivorous, their uncontrolled increase would exert extreme pressure on vegetation. This may cause wanton destruction to vegetation that may destabilize the ecosystem. In as much as these arguments appear logical and plausible, they still do not give any moral permissibility of eating meat. Just like any reason in support of unacceptable practice, proponents of eating meat do not give any solid ethical justification why humans should continue killing animals to please their test buds. There is no moral justification whatsoever to rationalize the eating of meat.…

Even if a person does not want to give up meat entirely, they can cut back to eating a meat selection to once or twice a week. This would significantly decrease the effects on the environment and reduce the amount of animals that are used in food production. The numerous advantages of practicing a vegetarian diet is not only beneficial to the world around us, but it supports our biological requirements. Because vegetarians eat naturally processed plant based foods, they alleviate the guilt of eating living creates and worries of ingesting unnatural hormones. A very common misconception is the mislabeling and generalization of those considering themselves to be vegetarians. Vegetarian is used to describe people who exclude meat, poultry, fish, or any other animal derived food from their diet. However, within the generalized term "vegetarian" come numerous different forms of the lifestyle, each classified based on the degree to which animal products are excluded from their diet and the reasoning such as ethical, religious, health. The different groups of vegetarianism fall along an imaginary spectrum, with semi-vegetarians, who are often excluded entirely due to behaviors conflicting with the practice, on one end of the spectrum and at the opposite end are vegans, the strictest of vegetarianism. The semi vegetarians, or those who exclude animal products from their lifestyle to some degree, are often banished by true vegetarians. This is partially due to the fact that semi vegetarians consume some sort of animal products, thereby contradicting the definition of the term. However, semi vegetarians' motivations are highly different. Some are obligated by religious beliefs to refrain from eating particular types of meats. Others follow the lifestyle for health concerns; say perhaps a person chooses to not eat red-meat because of cholesterol problems. Another possible motivation would be pure personal preference. Even though semi vegetarians fall short, they still obtain some of the positive health benefits that vegetarianism brings. Although meat is both healthy and harmful to your body it has its own…

In Margaret Lundberg's short story "Eating green" she has a theory about the planet becoming a healthier place to live if everyone became a vegetarian, which I believe is true. Lundberg talks about her childhood and how right off the bat her mother had her eating healthy food and that pretty much stuck with her through out her whole life. "We had two vegetables with every meal, ate plain yogurt for breakfast, and excercised with jack LaLanne." If most families started off like that it would be easier for kids to enjoy eating healthier food now instead of them liking junk food. Most people do not realize that what they eat does effect the planet and how we live on a daily basis and how badly it effects our health.…

In the article, “Stop Eating Meat and Save the Environment,” the author, James Kanter, argues that the gas methane, which is released by cows and other livestock in large quantities, is one of the most potent planet-warming gases (Kanter). This issue is addressed several times throughout the article, for the author is trying to show that as these animals are slaughtered, this detrimental gas, along with many others, is simultaneously diminishing the polar caps of our planet. Likewise, this is not the only problem associated with the meat industry. Deforestation for the sake of cattle or other livestock ranching is also something that has enraged environmental activist in recent years. As the demand for meat becomes more apparent, the need for land has also drastically increased. Forests all across the United States have been recklessly destroyed so that enough meat can be raised to satisfy consumers. But, often times, these consumer are oblivious to the fact that they are inflicting detrimental actions upon the environment. Thankfully, all of these problems come with an easy solution. If one would just consume less meat and eat more fresh, organic produce, mankind could slowly begin to wipe out this problem, for people all across the world would be subconsciously saving the environment with…

Another reason one might not become a vegetarian is simply because of the taste. Most people would miss the taste of meat too much. Former vegetarian, Laura Fraser, points out that most vegetarians live in America and England, where the food is not the main tourist attraction (Fraser). Most Americans are raised consuming meat and other animal products, so they are used to the taste, texture, and digestion. Another argument is that meat is our main source of protein.…
