In Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Mama is Mary Logan. She is a thirty-three year old woman who went to high school in Jackson, and then to Cradon Teacher school. Wilfully, she married Papa at the age of nineteen, after her father died during her final year at Teacher Training. Subsequently, Mama has four children, including Cassie, and has taught at the Great Faith School for fourteen years.
Moreover, Mary can be considered a hero in many ways, not to least in her role as a teacher. Together they brought up six children, only two surviving however. In the act of holding on to her land and protecting it from the clutches of Harlan Granger, and subsequently handing it over to her two sons, she is a hero because she is standing her ground, even in front of racist white men, sticking to her good morals of keeping what rightfully belongs to her, regardless of inequality of the races surrounding her. Spreading her experience and strong, good morale views, she tells Cassie stories of the past, preserving history in this way, but teaching Cassie valuable mistakes that have been made, in the hopes she won’t repeat them.
