In 2012 the film Silver Lining Playbook, was released. In the beginning of the film you see Pat Solitano being released from a mental hospital to the hands of his mother. This paper will analyze the themes of sex and gender, being a product of one's environment, and language and symbols. From Pat's perspective his life was perfect until he found his wife in the shower with another man, which enraged Pat. When Pat leaves the mental institution his only goal is to get his wife back although she has a restraining order against him. Days after his release, Pat meets Tiffany a young girl who has problems of her own from sex addiction to losing her husband from a work related incident. First, we are going to look into sex and gender, and how it interchanges between both protagonist. As I mentioned earlier Pat is obsessed with getting his wife back and his father has OCD. One of the issues that the film shined light into, were rituals and superstitions. Pat Sr. believed that when the Eagles a football team played games he had to have his son Pat Jr. and their jersey on so they are able to win games. In one of the scenes his beloved Eagles lost the game and he blamed it on Pat Jr. because he had been arrested prior to the game, when Tiffany shows to the Solitano's house and berates Pat for not attending a practice Pat Sr. then claims it's all her fault that Pat is the way he is. He goes on to saying that ever since his son met her he had not been available during the games, and that he had been is lucky charm.
