Chris Mccandless Character Analysis
Do you ever wonder what it’d be like to escape society and live off the wild? That is exactly what young Chris McCandless did. Chris was different from most people; he wanted to live his life free from society and rules. I take my own stance and believe Chris McCandless wasn’t crazy or incompetent; he just wanted to escape the chaos of the world.
Chris definitely left a lasting impression on everyone he met along his journey. Everyone couldn’t get enough of him. “So I asked Alex if I could adopt him, if he would be my grandson” (Franz 55). Ron had taken such a liking to Chris that he wanted to adopt him so he could carry out the Franz family name. Wayne Westerberg also became very fond of Chris. “A lot of folks here in town got pretty attached to old Alex” (Westerberg 16). Therefore Chris wasn’t a nutcase or unsocial because he easily made friends and left a strong impact on them.

Many people don’t chase or accomplish their dreams like Chris did. “No longer to be poisoned by civilization he flees and walks alone upon the land to become lost in the wild” (McCandless 163). McCandless is an adult, and he has the right to travel just as everyone else has. Chris believed there was so much more to life than getting a career and following the same conformed path as everyone else. “It is the experiences, the memories, the great triumphant joy of living to the fullest extent in which the meaning is found” ( McCandless 37). Chris McCandless lived a life of truth and sincerity.
In conclusion, Chris McCandless was just going after what he wanted and believed in life. He ended his life genuinely happy and peaceful. “He was smiling in the picture, and there is no mistaking the look in his eyes: Chris McCandless was at peace, serene as a monk gone to God” (Krakauer 199). Chris McCandless thought about life deeply and differently and lived his life accordingly, mostly without harming

    He realized that there are so many stressful things in today’s world. In order for people to excel in what is considered a “normal” life they need a good job to survive. McCandless’ mission was to break down all of the parts of life which he viewed as unnecessary.
