First and foremost, jobs is one difference between the society in The Giver and the society in modern day. In The Giver, the citizens are assigned jobs. On page 27 in the novel, it stated, “There was no doubt that Benjamin would receive his Assignment to that field and would probably be permitted to bypass most of the training.” In modern day society, all citizens pick which jobs they want. In the novel, they do not hold elections for whom their leader shall be. In modern day society, the citizens of every country hold elections on who they want as their leader. Holding elections can make people mad. Another example of differences in government is that the government in the novel controls everything. In modern day society, the government does not control everyone. Even though the government controls somethings, people still have their own rights. The next example is that in the novel, the government is the one who gives each family dwelling food every day and night. In modern day society, the people have to work to earn money and buy their own food. The third example is that modern day society has three branches of government to help govern the country. In the novel, they do not have any branches of government because only the Chief governs the community. Which is hard because being the only one governing the community is a hard job.
