Three questions will be selected at random and graded. Each question will be valued at 5 marks in which it will be graded based on:
a) Content contained in the answer
b) Answering in a logical manner in complete sentences using proper grammar and spelling.
c) If the answer requires a mathematical calculation, the use of proper mathematical format, showing numerical values in the correct number of significant figures and all units and identifiers.

1. The lab exercise requires that one use a microscope in which a commercially prepared slide of silk fibers is supplied.
What should one do to complete the microscope setup starting from the point in which the microscope is plugged in and placed on the lab bench in front of the user to the point at which the slide is being clamped onto the stage. One can assume that the microscope is set up such that the stage is in its lowest position and that the low power objective is locked into place.
2. a) State the steps one would follow to achieve an efficient and ‘quick’ focus of a prepared slide in which the letter ‘K’ has been mounted. Assume that one has completed all the preparation as per question 1.
b) In order to see the specimen or aspects of the specimen in greater detail one must increase the magnification. Assuming that one has achieved a focused specimen under low power, what is the proper procedure for setting up the microscope to view the specimen under medium power?
