If someone told you that failing to exercise regularly could be as deadly as smoking what would your first reaction be? If it was anything like mine, then you would be shocked and have trouble agreeing with this statement. However, numerous studies point out the fact that a lack of exercise can be as deadly as smoking.
Exercise is an important part of living a healthy lifestyle and people who are active regularly generally live longer than those who don’t.
According to Alice Park, from the lancet journal, a lack of exercise causes as many as 1 in 10 premature deaths around the world each year, which is roughly as many as smoking. Furthermore, in an article written by Nick Triggle from BBC.com, it was estimated that about a third of adults are not doing enough physical activity, causing 5.3 million deaths a year. Triggle also stated that while smoking and inactivity kill a similar number of people, the smoking rates are much lower than the number of inactive people.
La Times writer Emily Alpert explains how the problem of people falling short on exercise has become a global pandemic. According to the lancet journal eight out of ten teen-agers do not get enough exercise, and nearly a third of adults fall short. Failing to exercise is tied to worldwide killers such as heart disease, diabetes, breast and colon cancer. In a study conducted by I-Min Lee in the division of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women’s hospital, scientists calculated a population attributable fraction. This is a measure of how much physical inactivity led to diseases such as heart disease or diabetes. The results showed that lack of exercise causes about 6% of heart disease, 7% of type 2 diabetes, and 10% of breast and colon cancers worldwide. With this being said, it is clear just how important exercise is to ones health.
