Skellig By David Almond

The story in the book: “Skellig” by David Almond, is set in the house that the protagonist, Michael and his family have just recently moved into on Falconer Road. So far in the book, there are only three settings that have been mentioned. There is the garage, garden and the house. The garage is extremely old, with no one tending to it. “The timbers holding the roof were rotten and and the roof was sagging in.” (3) The timbers are rotten because they are too old, and the roof is sagging because it is old and it does not have enough support from the timbers. The garage is very chaotic and disheveled, that no one wants to waste their time cleaning it. “The people that took the rubbish out of the house were supposed to take it out of the garage as well, but they took one look at the place and said they wouldn’t go in it even for extra money.” (3) The garage is so chaotic that the people who are being paid to take out the garbage would not even go inside the garage. This is what the setting of the garage looks like.
The garden, like the garage is disheveled and quite chaotic. “There were just nettles and thistles and weeds and half-bricks and lumps of stone.” (6) Half bricks and lumps of stone are not supposed to be in a garden. This shows that no one has tended to the garden in a long time. The structure and form of the garden is not finished. “I sat on a pile of bricks against the house wall.” (7) The fact that there are a pile of bricks shows that there was either project that was not finished, or the structure was so old and deformed that it had fallen
