Smoking Rhetorical Analysis Essay
Rhetorical Analysis of Smoking Advertisement We can see the transition how the cigarette smoking advertisement campaign has changed over the years. For many years smoking was promoted through digital media until 2011, until it was restricted by the government. Several young people and teenagers started smoking without knowing its harmful effects both on their external and internal body organs. Numerous people are now aware of side effects of smoking which can damages their heart or lungs. Most people still believe that smoking doesn’t harm their physical appearance, but the wrinkles on the woman skin (Fig.1) gives an evident message to all the people around the globe: smoking will affect your beauty.

According to a study, which was conducted at the University of John Hopkins, smokers are four times as likely as nonsmokers to report feeling of unrested night’s sleep, which ultimately leads smokers having bags under their eyes. Psoriasis, which is an autoimmune skin-related condition, but according to a study in 2007 if a smoker, smokes a pack a day for 10 years or less, psoriasis risks goes up by 20%. The anti-smoking advertisement of the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has the power of convincing people that smoking is very harmful to their health. In the early stages it harms the internal body organs. Gradually the scars which were inside began to appear. Terrie Hall’s photo challenges the consumption of cigarettes that was promoted by the smoking companies and contradicts the assumption that smoking cigarettes is not so harmful to our health. In the end, “Every time you light a cigarette, you are saying your life is not worth living.”

This image comes from an advertisement which includes a gloomy setting showing the sadness of something to appeal to the audience’s emotions. The “Quit Smoking” commercial, produced by Fiona Sharkie, starts with a mother and her child walking together through a crowd of people; toward the middle of the video, the mom and her child get separated making the child very upset and scared. The sadness of the child makes parents feel guilty for possibly leaving their children for good. Lastly, smoking can affect you because it can have a bad influence on others, because kids see you and think it makes you popular. Some kids say that it is “cool” to smoke and every “cool” kid does it. I don’t agree with this statement and believe that “cool” kids don’t have to smoke.
