Social media has begun to take over our way of communicating with each other these days. We no longer use phones, email, or messaging to communicate. People now post their every move on social media. They put both their personal and professional lives out there for everyone to read and see. Sometimes we reveal too much personal information in these posts. I feel that social media will affect my career as a nurse in both good and bad ways. When using social media in the health care profession there are some positive influences. You should be very careful what information or pictures you post about patients. Anyone in the healthcare field knows you must be careful to not reveal any identifying personal information on a patient. Many offices have rules that don’t allow employees to be on social media while at work. There have been many instances of this occurring here lately. Nurses can lose their jobs, licenses, and face jail time if a HIPPA violation occurs. Also, if you go on social media to vent about your boss and they see it then you could get fired. I have seen many post on Facebook talking about bosses who fired their employees for talking about them on their private pages. I recall seeing one post about someone who had gotten a job and was talking about how it wasn’t the job they wanted but it would do for now. The girl then made a few comments about the company she had been hired for that were not favorable of that company. Her new boss then posted in the comments for her to not show up for her new job she was fired. Always think before you type just like you think before you speak. “Regrettably, social media can enable content posted during a momentary lapse in judgement to spread rapidly beyond the intended audience with one click. Much like a mirror, social media can reflect the best and worst aspects of the content placed before it far all to see (Lyons and Reinisch).” Everyone needs to be careful what they post on social media.
