Having spent the last six years studying in the social care field, I have come to realise my passion in helping and assisting people who may be going through difficult stages in their life.
So far, I have worked for a home care and a nursery. As a nursery assistant my role was to care and assist young children, aged between 6 months to 5 years old.
On Mondays and Thursday I was planning and organising fun and intellectual activities such as drawing, painting and reading books to the children. While on the rest of the days I was helping the nursery run as smoothly as it should, my duties included serving food, assist children that needed help, tidy up tables and work with the rest of the group to promote policies such as Every Child Matters (2004).
As a care assistant in the home care, my mainly role, was to assist patients; under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional. I certainly enjoyed working with the elderly as it has enlarged my knowledge about the home care equipment, for example how to operate a hoist and zimmerframe but mostly, it made me realize how important it is to treat your patients equally and fairly according to their needs.
To develop my knowledge and experience I have decided to volunteer again. I will be working with a family within my local neighborhood; the families I will be working with are ‘at risk’ families who have been referred to social workers, as they have a child or more who has a child protection plan. As a volunteer my job will be to work closely with social workers and provide guidance and support to the venerable family I will be assigned.
At this present moment I am in my third year of University, studying Child and Adolescent studies as an undergraduate course. Some of the units I am studying are: ‘Child Protection’, which is about policies and laws to safeguard children, ‘Leadership and Management’ which is teaching me how important it is for agencies to collaborate
