Like all the bright little colored boys and girls whom I knew when I was growing up in the 50's, I wanted to be a doctor. More accurately, my mother raised me to be a doctor. In a thousand ways, some subtle and some not so subtle, my mother implanted the idea that the sole calling worthy of the name was that of the physician.…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

There are many aspects of health care that intrigue me. I’ve always wanted to be a nurse; unfortunately it is very difficult to get into the program. However, if I ever go back to do that, I would want to either do labor and delivery or pediatrics. I have had the privilege of witnessing the birth of one of my nieces and it was the most amazing experience. To be a nurse and being a part of that on a daily basis would be awesome. I also have an extra soft spot for children, which is why pediatrics would also be of interest to me. Life threatening diseases do not only affect adults. I feel that being able to help children would only be helping our future.…

Coming from a remote village in India where access to medical care is limited, I have had the dream of becoming a physician since I was very young. But, being a curious individual, growing up I became fascinated toward other career paths in my childhood as well. For example, I wanted to become a pilot when I was in second grade, and wanted to become a professional volleyball player when I was in fifth grade. I am glad that I spent enough time in researching those career paths that I had absolutely no hesitation or distraction when I started pursuing my career in medicine. Today, I can say that pediatrics is my only career interest.…

Public health (PH) is an issue continually on the UK Government agenda and one in which it is anticipated that all health professionals will participate in (Nuttall, 2008). PH focuses on the health and well-being of a society and is the most effective means of protecting and improving it. It addresses the root causes of illness and disease, including the interacting social environmental, biological, and psychological dimensions, as well as the provision of effective health services. PH relies on evidence, judgement and skills and promotes the participation of the populations who are themselves the subject of policy and action (United Kingdom Public Health Association (UKPHA), 2008).…

At that moment, I knew I wanted to contribute to the field of medicine. I wanted to make a difference and I was determined to do just that. Although, I was unable to make a difference in my aunt’s life, I was eager to positively impact the lives of others. It soon became my purpose in life. Of course, I couldn’t flee into the area and begin saving lives just yet but gradually I became involved in other activities that contributed to my future goals. For example, I began to volunteer at the local hospital and shadow physicians. Shadowing and volunteering was such a rewarding and knowledgeable experience. I was able to interact with patients at all stages and able to directly see how physicians make a difference in individuals’ lives. I wanted to experience that exact feeling that those physicians felt when making a difference in the lives of patients. So, shortly after, I decided to obtain my certified nursing assistance license in high school. Becoming a CNA further encouraged me to pursue my dreams as a primary care physician. My job was such an enriching experience because I learned so much from the healthcare providers that I worked…

It was this experience that became somewhat of a calling, and I resolved to further learn about dentistry. Therefore, this year I am in the progress of completing a semester long internship course in the field of dentistry; this time determined not only to shadow for longer, but also to reflect on what I learned by keeping a journal of my accounts. Through this course I was able to get an adequate understanding of dentistry, and also learn and apply the necessary skills and qualities needed in order to achieve my goal and become successful. Furthermore, outside of school I have spent multiple summers volunteering at hospitals allowing myself to learn and expand my knowledge regarding health care and its various professions. These distinctive experiences are what makes me a deserving candidate for the Wornom Fellowship. By participating in these activities I have developed a dream to become a dentist, understood its professional and human aspects, and have set a goal to become what my heart and mind call…
