Statement of Purpose
"In this world, you either have an excuse or a story. I prefer to have a story" is the personal goal I have set for myself. This reinforces my belief in taking responsibility for the decisions of my life. Being the son of a scientist at DRDO, India, I have been fascinated about research and development since my early school days. I understand the importance of an accurate and precise instrument, no matter how small or big it is and also the worthlessness of the same in context of even a single human life. I achieved All India 25th rank in CIPEL Science and Mathematics Olympiad during high school life. I was awarded scholarship from my school for academic excellence and all round performance in co-curricular activities like quizzing, debating, singing et cetera from my 6th grade right up to 10th standard. I did a project on Analysis of various Indian Missiles in 8th Standard which gave me an insight into various propellant systems and thus got me interested into exploring the vast arenas of science and technology. In my senior secondary school at DAV Chandrasekharpur, I participated in a State Level Chemistry Exhibition and won the second prize. We had demonstrated manufacturing procedure of bio-diesel from used vegetable oil in a cost effective way. After passing out with 80% marks I chose Institute of Technical Education and Research, Bhubaneswar to pursue my undergraduate studies. Though I was adept in C++ programming in senior secondary level, I chose Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering as my branch of studies to gain technical prowess in one of the most budding fields of research and development. I will, any day, rate practical skills far more important than theoretical know-how. Hence, as a fresher I was an active member of the college Robotics club and the Society of Automotive Engineers. As a sophomore, I represented my university at TECHFEST 2010 (IIT Bombay) and was awarded certificate of ‘Engineering Excellence’ in

I can still vividly recall the eleven-year-old me fawning over the likes of Lawrence Krauss and Neil Degrasse Tyson. I was completely immersed in everything and anything pertaining to the vast universe beyond our seemingly insignificant world. I thought I had it all figured out. I would devote my life to being an astrophysicist and eventually earn my PhD. I would relish in the pink lettering on my wall that said “Dr. Mia”, but as I approach my late teens, my mind has been bombarded with what-ifs and buts. Irrespective of my change of heart, I still have an intense passion for math and science since it is how we explain the world around us, and that is why I have settled on biomedical engineering.…

When I was in fifth grade, I decided that I wanted to go to MIT, Caltech, or Stanford. At the time, I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do, only that I wanted to make a change, like William Lindesay. By the time sixth grade started, I had a vague idea of something involving both medicine and technology. A few months later, I had a moment of epiphany: I wanted to invent a method or equipment for doctors to flawlessly measure the amount of medicine to prescribe to patients of specific conditions.…

Since my teenage I wanted to become a computer engineer and work for multinational organization which not only pays well but also will have the opportunity to travel abroad. I am from a middle class Indian family where bearing the costs of studying from an English medium school is hard and yet my parents helped me study in English medium school. I studied English medium during all my schooling which helped me develop my literacy skills. I started learning computers since my 10th grade. . This was the time of mid 1995 when the computer classes were first introduced in my school in India and I was one of the member of the first batches that was offered the basics of computer and little bit of programming. This was the beginning and I was getting interested to learn more about computers. We also had to take up a exam at the end of the course to prove our competency in the subject though it was not part of the 10th grade board exam. I scored 83 out of 100 which gave me confidence that I can succeed in this field of study. From there on during my 11th and 12th grade I took computer science as my specialization and also completed Bachelor’s Degree in computer science. After my graduation it was time to look for my dream job but consulting with friends, family and seniors in college I realized that the degree that I earned is not just enough to…

I can recall three pivotal moments in my education paths in science and engineering. The foremost occurred in sixth grade when I was selected out of 130 females in my grade to attend the Women in Science camp. Here I learned about the many professions scientist can engage in, from forensics to astronomy. At this camp, I made it a goal to be a “woman in science.” At the time, I did not know specifically what type of science I wanted to become an expert in, but I narrowed it down with another major experience two summers ago at a camp referred to as the South Central Health Careers Camp. During the week, I was exposed to a variety of lines of work in the medical field, anything ranging from pharmaceutical practices to rehabilitation using electrical…

I have seen many people, who most of the times take the opportunity provided for them. And have succeeded in their life. I also had the same opportunity in my high school. There was science exhibition in my school. Many students had participated in the exhibition. I had the opportunity to participate in the exhibition. First I was not going to participate in the science exhibition. As one member was not feeling well I had to take part in the science exhibition. This exhibition proved a great help to me to select my major. The project was based on the “Intermediate Fuel” i.e. it shows how we can utilize the waste products to convert into high energy fuel. This project was based on the principle of conservation of energy. We had applied various principles and this principle helped me to develop interest in the field of science. And I was able to choose a right major. This also gave me an opportunity to meet new people and friends, which proved a great help to me to improve my speaking ability in front of new people. So this opportunity proved a turning point in my life.…

I would describe my education till now as a constant search to find answers to questions. A desire to understand things and answer questions has been my driving force. My ten years of schooling in St. Ann’s English Medium School (Rajahmundry) and two years of pre-university at Narayana Junior College (Hyderabad), which is one of the reputed colleges in India with Board of Intermediate accreditation have given me firm grounding in Mathematics and Physics, which I think will act as a big boost to my understanding and estimating abilities which could act as an important asset in the field of business. I have completed Four years of under graduation in Electronics and Communication Engineering at “GMRIT”, affiliated to JNTU University. During my college I had the opportunity of applying my theoretical knowledge and analytical skills to practical problems encountered in the real world.…

“Engineering is not merely knowing and being knowledgeable, like a walking encyclopaedia; engineering is not merely analysis; engineering is not merely the possession of the capacity to get elegant solutions to non-existent engineering problems; engineering is practicing the art of the organised forcing of technological change… Engineers operate at the interface of science and society.” - Dean Gordon Brown. Prior to starting secondary school at Spotswood College at the age of 13, I had little knowledge of the vast opportunities that the field of science offers, nor did I realise how intriguing and exciting science can be. It was in my first year at high school that was introduced to general science, a subject which I would continue to study for three years. I found that the areas within the science curriculum that I enjoyed the most were practical, real-life situations that were relevant to the real world, not just the world within the school laboratory. The process of applying scientific methods to solve real-life problems continued to interest and intrigue me throughout my years of studying general science, and I soon realised that science was the field that I wanted a career in. This idea hasn’t changed. In my second year of high school at Spotswood College, I was offered the chance to take part in an extension program in Chemistry before school three times a week, as well as continuing with general science as a subject. Throughout this year, I was continually amazed at the many different fields that chemistry, and also science as a whole, is composed of, yet once again it was the real-life, real-world applications that interested me. It was at this time that I started researching engineering as a career option. By the time I reached Year 12, I had to decide which fields of science I wanted to continue studying in. Throughout my previous years at high school I had found that it was the fields of…

Having grown up in a household with a „hands-on‟ father, I became interested in the technological aspects of life from a young age. My passion for technology was the deciding factor in choosing a technical high school over an academic high school. I completed grade 12 in Rhodesfield High School with Mechanical Engineering as technical subject. My secondary education was complemented in 2006 with a National Diploma in Mechatronic Engineering from Tshwane University of Technology. In 2011, I realised that I needed to expand my knowledge in the technical environment to stay competitive, and thus enrolled for a part time Bachelor of Technology degree in…

In the society that I live in, sadly there are only two acceptable professions that one must choose from: either that of a doctor or of an engineer. Following the norms, I initially aspired to become an engineer. Neither did I have the technical aptitude nor the skill-set to prosper in the field; nevertheless, I had made my decision because that is what the ‘trend’ was! As a very predictable result of my choice, my class performance deteriorated perpetually. After a great deal of introspection, it occurred to me that I did not enjoy my chosen feel of study, as I was not passionate about it. Having realized that, I had to make a choice of either adhering to my earlier decision or to make a radical change in the existing state of affairs. It was then that my father reminded me of the words of Steve Jobs:…
