Soul Surfer By Sean Mcnamara

The film, ‘Soul Surfer’, directed by Sean McNamara is based on a true story about a teenage girl Bethany Hamilton who is a champion surfer. A day surfing in the water with her best friend Alana, Alana’s father Holt and brother Byron, she is attacked by a shark leaving her with just a right arm. She then has to re-learn how to do everything with only one arm. She is told she will never surf ever again but she doesn't let this happen. It takes her family, friends, her Christian faith and determination to get back in the water and to reclaim the title of champion. Bethany ends in the national championship fifth with a spectacular wave that didn’t count at the end but in her eyes, it counted as she finished the competition with one arm.

An example of an obstacle in the film that Bethany faced was overcome the odds and her fears of returning to the water after losing her left arm in a shark attack. I believe that thoughts ran through her mind of her dream of becoming one of the world's top pro surfers were impossible. This was not the case. Bethany joined a youth group on a mission trip to Phuket in Thailand to help Thai children to overcome their fears of the ocean. She particularly helped a little boy using her surfboard, hoping this would coax him into it. It works and she realizes that she can use her gift to inspire people which motivate her to take up surfing again. Bethany taught herself with the help of her friends and family to surf with one arm. To be able to become a top pro surfer with one arm she says this to motivate herself, “Through him gives me strength". This saying is a verse from the bible which is Philippians Chapter 4 Verse 13; ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’ I believe that Bethany relied on faith as she is a strong Christian believer. “If you have faith, you
