Title: How to Draw Manga

Drawing Manga is awarding and challenging. Start with a basic idea and work to make it creative. Create costume and character design. Practice different themes, until you find the one that most fits what you want to draw. Practice today, and tomorrow. It’s ok to make eraser smudges.

There are several ways to produce manga art. With the proper tools, drawing manga can be a successful and fun event. Each person has their own preference when it comes to equipment. You will need a basic set of materials so you can sketch, use ink, and color your drawing. Let’s start with paper. It is recommended to use two types of paper. Use one for creating sketches and one for producing the finished color artwork. Next, choose some pencils for your drawings. “Pencil sketching is probably the most important stage, and always comes first when producing manga art.” (Li Yishan, Massive Manga Techniques for Drawing, Inking, and Colouring, 2011, pg 13) You should be sure to choose pencils that feel good when you hold them, and don’t refrain you from expressions. There are pencils that range from soft to hard lead. You can, also, try mechanical pencils. Mechanical pencils never lose their point, so you don’t have to worry about sharpening them. Colored pencils need sharpening, but sometimes, it is best to use them when they are blunt. When colored pencils are blunt, you can change the color of tone and shades by building up the layers of colored pencil. To keep your pencils sharp, buy a good sharpener. An electric one is good if you draw from one location, but if you draw from multiple locations, a handheld one will work. If possible, buy one that has

“Not like that!” My sister Hana used to yell at me every time I paused the video tape of a cartoon show. I would stand over the TV screen with my paper on the screen and pencil in my hand, copying my favorite characters. “I told you to draw, not to copy” she would add. “I want it to be perfect!” was my reply. At a very young age, I developed a passion for drawing. My sister used to challenge me to draw some of our favorite cartoon characters. From these humble beginnings I started to develop into a skilled painter. When my father recognized my talent, he bought me several drawing books. Although I have always enjoyed creating different types of art, portraits (drawing a person’s facial features), captured my interest the most. Portraits require…

However, my overall favorite, and in my opinion my most successful work is my spill drawing. Throughout the process of creating my piece, I focused on the realistic properties of my piece as well as the overall effect of the piece as a whole. While drawing, I paid attention to all the details. I kept a picture of a real eye close by, which I referenced multiple times and was therefore able to create a more realistic looking piece. In order to create a realistic looking piece, I had to focus on many different techniques while drawing. By using a picture as a reference, I was able to better recreate the values and details, and therefore creating a realistic drawing. For example, I paid close attention to the value and shading around the eye itself. Along with paying attention to value and details, my technique also significantly impacted how I went about drawing. For me, as well as most artists, the use of blank space is just as important as the penciled in part. For instance, I erased part of the iris of the eye in order to create a reflection, which in turn made it look more realistic. Overall, my spill drawing is my favorite and most successful work that I have created over this past semester. By focusing on value, shading, and precise details I was able to create a realistic drawing that I am proud to call my…

Respect, observant, self-deprecating, judgments and honesty. These are the words that come to mind when reflecting back on the novel The Great Gatsby. The narrator, Nick, is a quiet, reflective 30 year old man who moves to New York to learn about the bonding business. Now, it is probably easy to think of many differences between myself, a 17 year old girl living in the 21st century, and Nick a 30 year old man alive during the 1920’s but perhaps the similarities aren't quite as clear. Well if you look below the surface it is found that there are many traits that Nick and I share. The American Dream is defined as how a person would achieve the perfect life. I believe that Nick and I share the same ideas of attaining this “perfect life”. By becoming successful, focusing on individualism, and holding genuine happiness. Although Nick and I may…

George Will’s main point in “Dark Green Doomsayers” is to explain how the climate has changed over the years and what have been some of the causes of it. “Because of ‘ominous signs’ that the earth’s climate seems to be cooling down,” meteorologists were ‘almost unanimous’ that the trend will reduce agricultural productivity for the rest of the century.” “As global levels of sea ice declined last year, many experts said this…

Calligraphy is a beautiful art form. It was interesting to learn about the significance of calligraphy in Islamic Art. On the surface calligraphy text appears to be decorative and fairly simple to duplicate. I was surprised to learn that becoming a calligrapher could take years of practice. The fact that calligraphers were trained by masters and visually studied the art form proves that it requires skill and talent. Although calligraphy is heavy embraced in Islamic Art; it may be difficult to read for those with an untrained eye.
