Was Slavery a product of white racism or the desire to find a steady and reliable work force? Why did African slavery expand so rapidly in the late 17th century?…
Between 1450 and 1850 12 million slaves were transported to the new world from Africa. However only 10.7 million of them survived the dreaded passage to the new world. In the Atlantic world many things happened that changed the world: the discovery of the new world, new technology, and most importantly the causes and effects of slavery. Slavery impacted the world in many ways and changed the world how it is today.…
Spaniards brought Africans to the New World at the very beginning of the Spanish conquest. Spanish influence determined Africans' social aptitude, acculturated them, and manipulated their role to serve Spanish needs for production. Despite Spanish dominance, Africans were able to retain some resemblance of their own cultural distinction, and acted independently against Spanish interests. Africans roles evolved as the Spanish faced problems of satisfying high labor demands and maintaining control over a population much larger than their own. Initially, Africans played a military and socio-political part in the Spanish conquest; however, more significantly, Africans provided Spanish colonialism with a capable labor foundation and a safeguard between the Spanish minority and the natives. Although African and Afro-Latino roles did not always support Spanish aims or ideals, they were vital to the Spanish capacity to manage a populace much larger than their own and yield from…
The trek to the coast is considered to be more brutal than the voyages across the Middle Passage (“The Abolition of British Slavery”). Slaves were forced to walk to European coastal ports up to 1000 miles away while being shackled together and anyone who became sick or too weak would be left to die. At port cities, slaves were kept in dungeons until they were transported onto the ships which could take upwards to a year (“The African Slave Trade”). It is estimated that about 9 to 11 million slaves died before being taken out of Africa (“How Many People Were Taken From Africa?”). The life of a slave was really bad at this point and it only got worse. The Middle Passage is known to the worst part of the journey to the Americas. It is also estimated that between one to two million slaves died on the Middle Passage. Slaves were packed so tightly into the cargo-hold that they had to lie in each other’s feces and urine (“The African Slave Trade”). Smallpox and yellow fever spread like wildfire because of the unsanitary conditions (“The African Slave Trade”). Because of theses conditions, 12% of slaves that were sent away from Africa died during the voyages (“Facts About The Slave Trade”). Africa was not a nice place to live during this time and that affected Africa as a whole in the long…
In the Atlantic World, African slavery had many effects that would leave a lasting impact on the early Americas.…
Slavery had existed for centuries. They would capture africans and trade them for gold, guns and other good they needed they would trade for guns to help expand empires and obtain more slaves until they were against the european colonisers. Most africans slave were pulled from their families and were never reunited again sale could fight to be married into a family. The transport of slave from africa to the americans forms the middle passage of the triangular trade. The export of trade goods from europe to africa forms the first side of the triangular trade. African merchants delivered african slaves the conditions of the ships were terrible, which cause a lot of deaths. Most africans weren't use to the claimant most got sick. It was an easy…
One thing I found particularly fascinating was Equiano’s account of the destructiveness of the slave trade. People are kidnapped from their homes, families are broken up, and people are taken from not just their physical homes, but their history and culture. What I found particularly interesting was Equiano’s renaming, and how it erased his old identity. I found that interesting because while students often think of the obvious effects of the slave trade, the effect of being renaming and how it shapes your identity as a person is not often brought up. Another thing I found interesting was the effect of the slave trade on the owners. Equiano is shown different degrees of kindness and it is suggested that the cruel masters were possibly corrupted…
The experiences of slaves in Africa varied greatly but can be summarised in the word “Maafa”, which means ‘great disaster’. For four centuries slavery killed millions of innocent African lives. Africans died when they were captured, suffered when they were packed into filthy conditions in slave ships.…
The transatlantic slave trade was the largest horrific forced migration of Africans from their homelands to western hemisphere from 15th to 19th Century. Over twelve million men, women and children became the victim of this extreme exploitation. It was one of the terrific assaults in the human history which greatly influenced Africa’s Political and economic state. The purpose of the slave trade was to obtain profit and goods from European traders .Europeans used the slaves for plantations in Americas and also imported them to Brazil.…
Slavery had been going on for hundreds of years in the Caribbean. The European powers dominated and exploited the region for its riches, resources, and its people and provided an oppressed servile class of Africans to use as a labor resource. The slaves would work on plantations against their will without any regard for their well-being or livelihood. Furthermore, as the industry began to develop, the Caribbean saw a major decline in slavery partnered with a rise in indentured servitude. This essay will argue that the abolition movement and black resistance of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and the influx of Asian migrants influenced economic development throughout the region and introduced a new race and social questions.…
Throughout 200 years the Atlantic slave trade was removing millions of Africans out of their daily routine life in their home continent of Africa and taking them in the the new world; North America. Africans on board the slave vessels weren't just taking straight to America; they had a long voyage ahead of them. Taking one of 3 routes; 2 different triangular routes or the middle passage; with all horrible conditions surrounding them, Africans were not approving toward. Many got deadly diseases; htey have not been exposed or built up immunity to; or committed suicide by jumping overboard. The causes and effects of African slavery during the Atlantic slave trade period proved it was a very tragic time in history for Africans in the new world.…
Ever since the 5th century B.C, Africans have been stolen from their homes and sold to work for the rest of their lives in chains. At a dark time in our world’s history, almost every country participated in this trade. However, what many people do not know, is that Africa participated in the slave trade as more than just the victims. For hundreds of years, slavery had been alive and well in Africa. From prisoners-of-war being used to work the fields, to kings selling their subjects to westerners, Africa played a major role in the slave trade. Without Africa’s involvement in the slave trade, the use of slaves in other countries would be significantly lower. With the amount of slaves employed and shipped…
These slaves would be moved on large boats, some even large enough to hold 600 slaves. With no room for much else, they were packed together like sardines. There were three legs to this journey: the first, was from Europe to Africa for the trade of goods for slaves; the next, was the moving of the slaves to the Americas; the third, was for goods from the Americas to Europe. The boats used to carry these slaves were horrific. There were slabs of metal or concrete for the slaves’ sleeping areas, where they were so tight they were shoulder to shoulder, and maybe another foot or less above them was another slab for more slaves. This kind of trade was cruel. Humans, taken from their families and their homes, being shipped across an entire ocean, and forced to work day in and day out, for no pay, and no way of escape.…

In the early years of colonization from the English, French, and Spanish into the American continent, it is the Spanish who made the largest initial impact. In the beginning Spaniards looked to the New World as an area for empire building (Calloway, 2012). Missions were to convert/conform the indigenous population to Christianity and servitude to the Spanish empire, while increasing imports and exports of trade goods that would increase the power and wealth of the Spanish Monarchy. As time went by the warmongering, and greed stricken Spaniards looked more towards total conquest and servitude of the local populace and continued expeditions’ for wealth and fame. They relied on a combination of military superiority, occasional diplomacy, luck — and their greatest ally, disease (Walbert 2007).…
