Character counts when building self-esteem
Reflection #3

The assignment this week was to watch the movie Akeelah and The Bee and fill out a character trait chart. Akeelah was developing her character as the movie progressed. In order to have a strong self-esteem, you must first have a strong character. Showing positive character traits will boost your own self-esteem.

The first character trait exhibited in this movie was trustworthiness. Her brother shows this trait by saying if Akeelah made it to the National Spelling Bee, he would come and watch her. He kept his word and ended up coming to watch her. He stayed loyal to his family, which can be a key point to trustworthiness. A way I show trustworthiness in my life is by being a honest person. I never try to lie or cheat my way out of things. I don’t lie to my parents or other adults and I make sure to keep a good reputation for my family.

The second trait shown in this movie was respect. One-way Akeelah shows respect is by doing the Bee for her dad. Her dad was a avid speller and always played scrabble with her. She knew he would have wanted her to do it. Another way she shows respect is by trying her hardest to talk in proper English when at her coaches house. She corrects herself right away and makes sure to respect him when she is a guest at his house. A way I show respect in my life would be by using good manners and being considerate of other people’s feelings. I try to make sure everyone is happy and I am not causing anyone any trouble. If I am a guest, I make sure to show proper etiquette and manners at all times. I make sure to show my elders respect as well. The third trait showed was responsibility. Akeelah takes the time everyday to study new words and watch the taped of past spelling bees. She wants to win so she takes on the responsibility to try her hardest to learn words as much as she can. I show responsibility by doing things such as, showing up on time

Sharon is a 17 year old girl at the stage of adolescence, to add on to that she’s also a single mother of two children. Throughout her life she has had to grow up more than others as she has a family of her own to look after as well as her educational life which will determine how her future will turn out later. In this assignment I will state as well as outline factors that can influence the development of Sharon’s self-concept. Before I continue I will be discussing self-concept, self-esteem and self-image in terms of Sharon. Self-concept is how Sharon views herself in terms of her strengths and weaknesses; self-concept is what she thinks of herself as… While self-esteem is how much Sharon values herself, in other words if Sharon had a high self-esteem she would be more likely to believe herself as an extremely likeable person. Lastly, self-image is basically the overall image Sharon has of herself, what she believes her own image portrays.…

The first character trait Katie displayed was her fearlessness. For instance, on the first day of school when Shane, Devin, and, Brad were troubling Will, Katie was the only one to stand up for him. On account of everybody in the entire school was frightened by Shane, and no one would even dare to stand up to him. Also, on another occasion, when Will was being abused by Shane, Katie was still valiant enough to assist William, when she knew she might get harmed. Especially, in the situation where her father is in the hospital, Katie was gallant enough to…

To start off my essay I would like to begin with my two strongest qualities identified through the Success Profiler Assessment. The first one is self-esteem which I have been told I have a lot of. I’m in sports and the mindset that my coaches always taught me was no matter what before you step out you must always believe you are the best out there and show that you are. Another reason is my father is in the U.S army and he has a very high level of self-esteem as well as my siblings because that’s how our father always told us to be that we were the best and people will look at us as the best. My parents always told me that you can be all you can if you put your mind to it so I push myself to do great things and when I accomplish them they boost my self-esteem only making me want to accomplish more and make a statement. I want to join the military and I want to have enough confidence in myself I am capable of accomplishing any task to serve my country while being a better citizen as well. My next quality is interpersonal assertion. I am really well with taking criticism if it is benefiting me and making me better at a task. I don’t get upset or lash out because someone told me I was doing something wrong and they simply just wanted to help me accomplish my goal by telling me what to improve on.…

    Big Five Trait Clusters

In modern psychology, the “Big Five” Personality Traits are five categories of personality that are used to describe human personality and the behaviors in which they differ from each other. Some researchers have concluded that adult personality change is genetically influenced. Researchers say individual differences in the “Big Five” traits are large and highly stable and, an adult scoring high or low at a certain age is likely to do the same at another age, with intervals of three to 30 years’ time (Costa & McCrae, 1994). In more than 150 longitudinal studies with more than 5000 participants, reanalysis showed personality trait stability improved during early and middle adulthood, peaking in the fifties (Roberts & DelVecchio, 2000). These traits are broad categories of personality traits and not all researchers agree on the names given. However, these five categories that remain stable throughout adulthood are: neuroticism, extroversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness.…

However, as a child on the streets Dana fights through many tough obstacles that enable her to become an optimistic, courageous and trusting individual.…

In this chapter I learned a lot. I learned about values I need to succeed in life. I need to believe in myself by developing self-acceptance. High self-esteem is the fuel that can propel us into the cycle of success. If I have high self-esteem, I will most likely chose options that will move me toward success. If you don’t believe in yourself most likely no body will.…
