Spondylolisthesis Research Papers
Hello Professor and class,
I chose to write about Spondylolisthesis. Spondylolisthesis is a fracture or slippage of the vertebrae and the part of the axial skeleton this disorder affects is the lower back. People that have Spondylolisthesis may have symptoms like lower back pain, stiffness, muscle spasm, a pinched nerve running down one or both legs, or numbness. The long term effects from having this seems to depend on how severe the symptoms are. Some ways that a doctor could treat Spondylolisthesis are to give medication, pain management, physical therapy, hydrotherapy, a brace, and in more severe cases surgery (Mayfield clinic, 2015). Personally, I would try everything but surgery first. I have a herniated disc in my back and I know how

Stenosis means "closing in" or "choking". Spinal stenosis describes a condition in which the nerves in the spinal canal are closed in, or compressed. The spinal canal is the hollow vertical hole formed by the bones of the spinal column. Anything that causes this bony hole to shrink can squeeze the nerves inside. This narrowing can irritate the nerve roots that branch out from the spinal cord, or it can squeeze and irritate the spinal cord itself. This may cause pain, numbness, or weakness, most often in the legs, feet and buttocks. As a result of many years of wear and tear on the parts of the spine, the tissues nearest the spinal cord sometimes press against the nerves. The actual narrowing of the spinal canal does not cause symptoms. Symptoms develop when the spinal cord or nerve roots are compressed. Spinal stenosis may affect the cervical, thoracic or lumbar spine. The most common area affected is the lumbar spine followed by the cervical spine. Although many people older than age 50 have some narrowing of the spinal canal, not all experience symptoms. This helps explain why lumbar spinal stenosis is a common cause of back problems in adults over 50 years old.…

HISTORY OF PRESENT ILLNESS: This 40-year-old Latin female presents with complaints of low back and right leg pain. She said that she hurt her back in a motor vehicle accident three years ago and she has had a history of intermittent low back pain since that time. Last December she started a job where she had to lift boxes that weighed approximately 40 pounds. Around the first of January this year, she began to complain of back pain that gradually went into her right leg. The pain is primarily in the sacroiliac region and radiates into the buttock and lateral lower leg as far as the ankle. She has no numbness. Coughing and sneezing exacerbates her pain. She has to move around to get comfortable when lying down, but she is more comfortable lying down than in any other position. She is still working fulltime, but is not doing the heavy lifting at this time. She has been going to a Chiropractor for the last two months with no pain relief. She has taken Flexeril, Norflex, Tylenol with codeine and Darvocet. All of these have failed to improve her symptoms. She had a CT scan done recently and we are getting those results.…

I would like to talk about a slipped disk also know as a prolapsed disc or a spinal disc herniation and the closly related condition sciatica. When people say they have a slipped disc, they are often using a general term for back problems. Many people are unaware that the term ‘slipped disc’ can refer to a range of medical problems; all of which relate to the discs of soft tissue that separate the vertebrae in the spinal column. The spine is made up of 24 vertebrae, these vertebrae allow for a variety of movement. Flexion and extention [to bend forwards or backwards] and lateral flexion [side way movement and twisting.]. Constant combinations of the two movements can put great strain on to the back, which can then result in a slipped disc. A slipped disk can occur due to any one of the following, lifting, trauma, injury or an idiopathic reason. The discs are protective pads which lay between each vertebrae. The discs job is to cushion and as shock absorbers to the spine when the body is moving. A slipped disc can occur along the complete length of the spinal column from the neck to the lower back.…

The most common type of treatment is nonsurgical, there are many varieties within this treatment options. Some doctors may say to not do any activity for 7 weeks to 3 months and be in a soft or hard shell brace. Other doctors believe that the brace is not worth the pain and that they should just stop for a little while and calm down with activity. Normally doctors recommend physical therapy so you can strengthen your back muscles so when you go back to activity you can be supported. Finally there is the option of acupuncture, this is a very controversial technique, I have done it a couple of times and it is very relaxing and helped with my pain a lot. What acupuncture is meant to do is prompt the body to produce chemicals that help to reduce pain. The other option is surgical and is rarely necessary. It is only recommended if you have been pulled from sports and braced for at least 3 months and after 6 months you continue to have pain. At that point the doctors recommend trying surgery if pain is bad and constant. What the doctors do during surgery is take out the part that is causing pain and fuse back the part that has fractured. The one that I would recommend through experience is acupuncture, I would recommend it is because you do not necessarily have to discontinue sports to help with the pain. The problem is the acupuncture does not heal or help heal your back what it does is help reduce pain so if you wanted it to heal your back fully so you can play a contact sport bracing and taking time out is the way to go. Physical therapy is a really good technique to help support your back, but the problem is it does not heal it like acupuncture but it does support you back so if you are in a situation where you need to do activity then your back will not be affected as much. Most people take a break from sports and do physical therapy so when they are done with the break there back is fully supported…

According to the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies, the number of Americans who suffer from chronic back pain is 100 million (AAPM). Fortunately, there are many options out there that may help these Americans with their back pain. Relief ranges from surgeries to injections and from chiropractors to physical therapists and all in between. Having been diagnosed with scoliosis and degenerative disk disease since 2006, I have personal experience with most all of these treatments. Anyone suffering from grave pain of the spine needs to understand the difference between physical and chiropractic therapy before deciding which one to select as the correct therapy to relieve his or her pain. Although chiropractic work therapy and physical therapy both seem to be effective in treating diseases of the back, physical therapy seems to be more effective.…

People can develop back problems in a variety of ways. Three of the most common ways would be herniated disk, degenerative disc disease and muscle strain. In order to be sure that you have one of these diseases, you should do some research and make an appointment with your doctor because it can cause permeant damage to your body if you do not take action. A herniated disk is a condition, which refers to a problem with the rubbery disk between the spinal bones. Symptoms that are associated with this disease include back pain, foot numbness or hand numbness. Degenerative Disk disease is osteoarthritis of the spine, usually in the neck or lower back. Chiropractic is a complementary and alternative health care profession that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuro-musculoskeletal system and its effects on general health. The practice of chiropractic is a drug-free, hands-on approach to the medical field, and is typically recognized for its procedure of spinal manipulation known as “adjustments.” The purpose of this care is to apply manual force to restore joint mobility to areas of the body that are restricted in their movement and are thus causing discomforts. Such discomforts may be the result of tissue injury, which can be caused by anything from a car accident to improper posture to consistent daily stress, and so forth. When tissues are injured, they can cause inflammation, pain, and limited functionality. By providing spinal manipulation to affected area, mobility is restored, thus alleviating and healing the muscle strains causing the discomfort.…

When people hear that I have scoliosis they generally have a lot of questions, or if they know what it is they have to compare me to their aunt’s sister’s dad’s cousin who has it. Scoliosis is not the end of the world, but there should be more awareness for it. Scoliosis is defined as: an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine (Scoliosis NP). It can be different for all who have it depending on the degree of the curve or curves, and people go through it differently. For me, mine was serious enough that a simple brace would not have corrected the curve enough, and my doctor recommended surgery.…
