With Wake Forest’s resources, I can envision myself becoming an entrepreneur who shocks the market with a company that promotes social change and generates profit. College should provide a safety net for students who have big ambitions. Wake Forest can provide me with the safety net and assure that no matter how outrageously crazy my ventures and ideas can be, I won’t fail because Wake Forest will help me get back up and encourage me to keep failing until I succeed. Anyone can say that he or she wants to attend Wake Forest for its name, ranking, and academic rigor, but not many know early on how he or she can bring value to the Winston Salem, and global community. Working with bright students and faculty members will help me in creating a difference that I’ve dreamt of since my freshman year in high school. Being a Demon Decan wouldn’t be a three year commitment, rather it would be a lifelong commitment and the way I live as a Demon Decan would become a lifestyle throughout my…
This has made me become resilient and versatile. With my family’s business background combined with my past experiences regarding adaptation I aspire to be a successful business person in this ever-changing global economic climate. I yearn to work internationally in the field of business and I hope one day I can fulfill this dream. I can envision myself pursuing my aspirations on a UC campus in the future. With the UC system being one of the best public school systems in the world, having a diverse multicultural environment, and being in the IT business state of the world, I believe strongly that I can entrust myself and my future learning right here at…
“Theseus was, of course, bravest of the brave, as all heroes are; but, unlike other heroes, he was as compassionate as he was brave, and a man of great intellect as well as great bodily strength,(Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes). This is a quote about the Grecian hero, Theseus. The quote itself describes him with great accuracy, because he is the greatest Greek hero. There are three reasons why.…
On the night I shared the news of my nomination as one of EIU’s 2016 Top Black Achievers with my family, my younger cousin, Diana, sent me a message saying, “Congratulations. I aspire to be as great as you. You literally inspire me to try hard to be successful.” To which I responded, “Aspire to be even better!” I was moved beyond expression. Diana’s words made me realize that by remaining steadfast in my quest for educational enrichment, I am also positively influencing young people who look like me and come from similar socioeconomic backgrounds. My quest for education is sending the message that not only can they reach the doors of higher education, but they can work even harder and accomplish so much more. Coming from a social climate that either indirectly or…
I had always heard the same thing, “Graduate from a good college and find a decent living, and you’ll be happy and successful.” Hah! What a capitalistic, factory-produced, mind-n(d)umbing fairy tale to tell impressionable children, I thought. Nope, I was smarter than that. I would be the one to take the road less traveled—to go against the grain and live my own life the way I wanted to. After barely graduating high school with a GED (or a GED equivalent actually…), I took off to LA to become a music-producer. I was going to be big. I learned the trade, worked inside multi-million dollar studios, and formed a band. I had it all figured out and I was going to show everybody that school was for fools. As with everything in life, this intoxicating success did not last. I began to feel something was missing. Here I was, living the dream that I had imagined for myself, and yet, I didn't feel much fulfillment.…
I am one of many students who come from small-town U.S.A. with huge aspirations. I have a great desire to depart from my home in order to pursue my dreams. My passion is to become a script/screenwriter for film companies that include; Walt Disney and Pixar Studios. These aspirations came from a small town I call home. Growing up in a small town is not difficult but it can be irritating. When I was younger I believed that my town was a dreadful prison and desired to escape its repulsive grip that it held on me. This town presented itself with nothing except for a Wal-mart and a few fast food restaurants and the nearest mall was thirty minutes away in another state. And as I advanced in years, I continued to believe that all this town…
At the Fashion Institute of Technology, I plan to accomplish numerous things, such as learning how to create paintings with different materials and innumerable delightful techniques. I relish using acrylic paints and watercolors. Many different materials are used in the fine arts curriculum. I believe that FIT will teach me not to give up and not to quit during a difficult task. The Fashion Institute of Technology can also help me realize my goal, which is to become a great artist. The curriculum for the fine arts program teaches 2D, 3D, sculpting and more. This would help me advance my artwork to another level. In my studio art class last year, I was taught a different style of painting, which was difficult for me. I learned about aboriginal art.…
My first exposure to occupational therapy came while I was working as an ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapist with a young girl with apraxia. Her speech problems had been linked to a lack of core strength, and we were to begin implementing an exercise routine to increase her strength. To achieve this goal in an enjoyable yet effective way for the child, an occupational therapist was consulted and began teaching us methods that incorporated preferred play activities into her core strengthening program. Running this new program became the highlight of our sessions, for both me and her it seemed. The smiles and giggles had me enjoying my job on a greater level; it was not only entertaining for the child, but a delight for me to implement. It was then I became extremely intrigued about the OT profession, and decided to explore the options the field had to offer. Research and curiosity eventually landed me on various websites and talking to those in the field, gaining knowledge about the different types of therapies and types of needs targeted by occupational therapists. The part that struck me most after all my research: OT is about daily life. It is about the activities that occupy our time, the small obstacles most people tackle each day with ease, obliviously unaware of the magnitude of importance these tiniest of accomplishments can truly encompass. The little everyday challenges in life are often the ones most overlooked, but to those unable or learning to conquer these challenges, their importance is evident. To me, these daily obstacles seemed like the most essential to overcome, small successes that could greatly improve an individual’s quality of life.…
The first step to leading a successful life is finding what you enjoy and be good at it. Combs says that when you are feeling good about something and you are actively engaged in it, you have found a passion. He tells us to use our “built-in compass,” which is our emotions. Only you will know if something angers, bores, or excites you. Your “gut feeling” lets you know if you should continue to pursue something. I definitely agree with this because it reminds me of Harvey MacKay’s quote, “Find something you love to do, and you will never work have to work a day in your life.” In the past, there was a marketing internship that I did not enjoy because I knew that this wasn’t what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. So, I found a company that allowed me to use my marketing skills to help people in the medical industry. I truly enjoy it and feel like I am vacationing every time I go to work. Channeling your knowledge and emotions towards finding what you are passionate about is very rewarding. This process will lead to a successful life, both physically and spiritually.…
When I first started training to be a nurse, my most compelling reason for peruse in the career was to care for the sick. Now that I am approaching the end of my three years of training my rationale has changed, I now want to empower patients in regards to their own health, supporting families in need, care for the ‘sick’ child and make a difference amongst as many people as I can.…
Participating in the Rady Children’s Summer Medical Academy would be a dream come true, as well as a huge step on the path that I wish to take into the future. I would be ecstatic to join the SMA because I would like to learn about different opportunities in the medical field, to be shown the technicalities and requirements of the job, and to be introduced to additional pathways that may lead to the goal that I have set myself. In the future, my dream is to become a pediatrician and work with children and adolescents, because I feel that the next generation is the future, and I want to be able to shape and influence it. The experiences that I have had and the opportunities that I have partaken in have left me with the desire to change the world, and I believe that that can be achieved by tackling one problem at a time.…
“Whap!” A spiraling red dodge ball crashes into my face and suddenly I am awake. The outcries from the eighth-grade girls around me pull me back into the packed room full of 200 middle schoolers. As I look around I realize there is no place I would rather spend my Friday mornings than volunteering with somewhat smelly middle schoolers as a Campus Life leader. Here, I discovered my passion for working with middle school students. They helped me discover that I wanted to change my major from Elementary Education to Middle School Education. Here at UNK, I am a part of SEAN and participate in student directed one acts. These activities are a fun break from studying and I plan on continuing with these activities throughout my years here at UNK. In high school, I…
My dreams and aspirations are to be so successful that I am not dependent on anyone else. Ever since I was a little girl, I have wanted to be someone with power. To obtain power, I have to first obtain the knowledge, and to do that, I need to go to college. I have seen people become too dependent on others, and if anything upsets that relationship, the dependent one just crumbles. I don't want that happening to me, so I plan to study hard, make good grades, and be a top executive in a big firm. However, with my new goal-oriented nature, I will realize that I am working towards my college degree and my future success, and I will regain the drive to excel. Moreover, I now realize the emptiness in the lives of people who can only do one thing well. There is tremendous benefit in being well-rounded, and I now understand that even my least favorite subject will contribute to my ultimate goal of living a rewarding life while working at a fulfilling career. The courses will be challenging, but I am willing to do what it takes to achieve my ultimate goal.…
